Thursday, 13 December 2007 http://www.stuff.co.nz/4322795a12.html Police in six countries have arrested 40 people, including 14 in Australia, during co-ordinated raids which authorities say have smashed an important international drug ring. Australian Federal Police said today international law enforcement officers had seized 600kg of cocaine, 111kg of ice, 83kg of ecstasy and 1200kg of materials used to produce ice and ecstasy. The Australian end of the operation, launched in August after drugs were found concealed in suitcases from Canada, involved officers from Customs, the AFP, the NSW police, the Australian Crime Commission and the NSW Crime Commission. Seventeen people have been arrested in two five-month drug operations targeting south-west Queensland. Police said the parallel operations were brought to a close with raids on properties in Roma, Surat, Charleville and other nearby locations. More than $27,500 in cash, a motor vehicle, a ride-on mower and expensive entertainment systems were seized, which are thought to be the proceeds of crime. Drug paraphernalia was also found. The raids come after the seizure of about 30 grams of methylamphetamine and 420 grams of cannabis, found by police in earlier raids as part of both operations. The drugs have an estimated value of approximately $18,000. State Drug In…

In his opening address, Crown prosecutor Darrell Blais told the seven-woman, five-man jury the case involves “one of the largest and potentially most profitable cannabis marijuana productions in Saskatchewan history.” Lawrence Hubert Agecoutay, 52, Chester Fernand Girard, 59, Nelson Edward Northwood, 58, Jack Allan Northwood, 55, Joseph Cla…

January 24, 2008 09:28am HEAVY pot smokers will suffer serious lung disease two decades earlier than their cigarette-smoking counterparts, and the style of dope smoking is to blame. The deep, slow inhalation and long breath hold is predisposing cannabis smokers to a condition of rapid lung destruction much younger in life, a study by Melbourne researchers has found. A team from the Department of Allergy, Immunology and Respiratory Medicine at Monash University reviewed the lung condition of middle-aged chronic cannabis smokers. They found high rates of bullous lung disease, a debilitating condition where air trapped in the lungs causes obstruction to breathing a…
