Police disrupt motor cycle gang cannabis production

Recommended Posts

Detectives from the Organised Crime Investigation Branch, supported by resources of the Australian Crime Commission, believe they have caused significant disruption to the alleged syndicated cannabis growing activities of a local chapter of the Finks Motor Cycle Gang.

Investigations during recent weeks have resulted in several arrests and seizure of fifty hydroponically-grown cannabis plants, about 18 kgs of drying cannabis, hydroponic equipment and motor vehicles.

On Thursday 3 January 2008, detectives searched a Blair Athol property and seized hydroponic equipment, 8 hydroponically-grown cannabis plants and about 18 kgs of drying cannabis which they will allege had been produced in two bedrooms of the house. A 25 year old man from Virginia and a 23 year old man from Kilkenny were arrested and charged with complicity in growing cannabis and have been bailed to appear at the Holden Hill Magistrates’ Court on 21 February 2008.

Later that day, further premises at Enfield and Parafield Gardens were searched and police seized hydroponic equipment and a further 42 hydroponically-grown cannabis plants, 18 at the Enfield premises and 24 at the Parafield Gardens premises. Police will allege that the cannabis growing activities at these premises were connected to the cannabis growing activities at the Blair Athol property searched earlier that day.

On Tuesday 15 January 2008, a 60 year old man from Enfield was arrested and charged him with complicity in activities connected to hydroponically-grown cannabis production and dishonestly dealing with documents. It will be alleged that he was managing properties on behalf of property owners but was making the properties available to alleged drug producers for the purpose of cultivating cannabis without the property owners’ knowledge. He has been bailed to appear in the Adelaide Magistrates’ Court on 4 April 2008. It will be alleged that this person is linked to the Finks Motor Cycle Gang through his association with another person.

On Wednesday 16 January 2008, a 24 year old man from Christies Beach was arrested and charged with producing cannabis for sale. It will be alleged that he had cultivated hydroponically-grown cannabis at his Christies Beach home on behalf of other persons who have also been charged as part of this investigation. He has been bailed to appear at the Christies Beach Magistrates’ Court on 12 March 2008.

On Tuesday 22 January 2008, a 24 year old man from West Croydon was arrested and charged with complicity in serious drug activities connected to hydroponically-grown cannabis. This person is a “hang around” of the Finks Motor Cycle Gang and it will be alleged that he was the organiser of hydroponically-grown cannabis production, which police suspect was conducted on behalf of the Finks Motor Cycle Gang. Detectives also seized a Harley Davidson motor cycle, a Toyota sports car and a Commodore sedan from this person which they will allege were purchased with proceeds of crime. This man has also been charged with breaching bail and blackmail (unrelated to the cannabis growing activities). It will be alleged that he extorted money from an international student studying in Adelaide, following a minor vehicle accident in November 2007. Police will be opposing bail and he is expected to appear before the Adelaide Magistrates’ Court later today or early tomorrow.

These particular police activities form part of a larger investigation into the criminal activities of the Finks Motor Cycle Gang by members of Organised Crime Investigation Branch and the Australian Crime Commission. This investigation has previously resulted in several arrests and the seizure of large quantities of cannabis destined for Queensland.

Detective Superintendent Deane Paynter, Officer in Charge, Organised Crime Investigation Branch said this investigation has demonstrated the propensity for motor cycle gangs to implicate and use otherwise innocent people in their unlawful activities. It sends a message to the public that it is unwise to deal or associate with any person whom they believe to be associated with a motor cycle gang.

Anyone with information about the illegal activities of motor cycle gang members is urged to contact BankSA Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Information can be provided anonymously and rewards are available.
