Crime Stoppers call leads police to hydroponic cannabis house

Recommended Posts

An anonymous call to Crime Stoppers has led to police seizing hydroponic cannabis worth about $1 million from a house in Sydney’s south-west.

About 7am today officers attached to the Wetherill Park Region Enforcement Squad raided the house at Gipps Street, Smithfield, finding four of the home’s five bedrooms converted to sophisticated hydroponic cannabis set-ups.

A 43-year-old man was arrested at the property and taken to Cabramatta Police Station for questioning. He’s expected to be charged with the enhanced indoor cultivation of cannabis.

About 200 mature cannabis plants were seized from inside the home and have an estimated potential street value of about $1 million.

Today’s raid was part of Operation Plante which has been targeting hydroponic cannabis houses in Sydney’s south-west since February last year.

In that time, the Wetherill Park Region Enforcement Squad has raided more than 35 homes, seizing in excess of $11 million worth of cannabis and arresting more than 20 people.

Officers from the squad have praised members of the public for their assistance with the operation, saying that anonymous calls to Crime Stoppers had led to a large number of the successful raids.

Anyone who suspects a drug house is operating in their area can phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Callers can remain anonymous if they wish and rewards of up to $1000 are available for information that leads to an arrest.
