In two separate incidents at Sydney's North Shore, more than $1,000,000 worth of ecstasy and cannabis was uncovered by police yesterday. The drug haul follows the discovery of a clandestine lab and 10 kilograms of cocaine at addresses in Artarmon, Turramurra and West Ryde last month, but police said the North Shore was not being targeted for drugs. "It's more opportune than anything else. The timing is just coincidental, I would think," police spokesman David Rose said. He said an operation focusing on the North Shore's drug trade was not under way, and the two arrests made last night were not planned in conjunction with each other. In the first arrest, police too…

MORE than 50 per cent of Australia's prisoners tested positive to cannabis over the past year, a report has found. The Australian Institute of Criminology today released two comprehensive reports focusing on drug use and intimate relationship violence among prison detainees. The data was collected from more than 4500 people in police custody at nine sites across the nation. The data was taken from voluntary questionnaires filled out by the police detainees, 70 per cent of whom also provided urine tests. The report showed that drug use and intimate relationship violence was high among detainees. More than 50 per cent tested positive for cannabis, nearly a quarter…

THE VICTIM of a violent burglary in Ballarat East admitted to being "stoned and drunk" at a committal hearing yesterday. Giving evidence against an alleged attacker, Geoffery McGinness told Ballarat Magistrates Court he was a "dole bludger" who consumed alcohol and marijuana daily. "I'm stoned and drunk right now," he said. "I had a stubby over lunch, I have cannabis every day." The 21-year-old swore repeatedly during the hearing, drawing several warnings from Magistrate Luisa Bazzani. Ms Bazzani eventually left the bench in frustration, telling Crown prosecutor Andrew Grant to "speak to" his witness. The defendant in the case, Shane John Warren, was allegedly…

A new research and education centre targeting cannabis is expected to be up and running by the end of this year. The Federal Government has announced the $12 million centre will be run by the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre, based at the University of New South Wales. Federal Minister Christopher Pyne says the centre will provide information to young people in particular about the dangers of the drug. "Cannabis is still a very important part of the drug scene and is the most used drug in Australia still, so we don't want to in our attempt to fight ice and ecstasy and other synthetic drugs take our eye off the ball of fighting cannabis," he said. THC eases allergic reactions A FOLK remedy has been resurrected by scientists who found active ingredients in cannabis reduced allergic reactions. The research, conducted on mice, points the way towards cannabis-based treatments for irritated skin. Extracts from the hemp plant were traditionally used to treat inflammation and could be bought from chemists in the early part of the 20th century. But fears about the intoxicating effects of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the chemical that causes the cannabis high, led to a ban on sales in the 1930s. The new research suggests the herbalists who used cannabis ointments to treat eczema knew what they were doing. Sci…

A PRISON employee smuggled a loaded gun into a jail in an alleged plot to kill mobster Lewis Moran, a court has heard. The gun was found in the cell of a convicted kidnapper in 2003. The prison worker allegedly handed a package containing the gun to the kidnapper in the presence of a road-rage killer who was a close associate of gangland murderer Carl Williams. Crime patriarch Lewis Moran, 58, was slain the following year at the Brunswick Club. Williams, 36, was jailed this month for organising Moran's murder. The County Court heard that several people could be charged over a conspiracy to kill Moran while he was in custody. A former Port Phillip Prison emplo…

SMOKING is still the biggest cause of preventable death and disability in Australia, a new report says. It is worse than obesity, alcohol, high cholesterol, road crashes, illicit drugs or unsafe sex, the report by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) found. Of 14 preventable health risks, tobacco was the single biggest killer and worst cause of disease. It was responsible for 12 per cent of all deaths in Australia in 2003, killing more than 15,000 people. Next worst were high blood pressure, high body mass, physical inactivity and high blood cholesterol. Alcohol, low consumption of fruit and vegetables, illicit drugs, occupational hazards, domes…
