'Queen of Pop' jailed for 12 months

June 1, 2007 - 11:59AM

Former Australian Queen of Pop Allison Durbin has been jailed for 12 months for drug trafficking.

Durbin, now known by her married name Allison Giles, was handed a 24-month jail term today but half of the sentence was suspended.

The reclusive former pop star, who shot to fame in the 1960s and 70s, had pleaded guilty in the Victorian County Court to trafficking a drug of dependence, cultivating a narcotic plant and theft of electricity.

The court heard Giles, 57, had a hydroponic set-up at a house in West Footscray and supplied cannabis to drug dealer and father of snatched baby Montana, Giuseppe Dom Barbaro, in 2003 and 2004.

In sentencing, Judge Ian Robertson said as a rehabilitated heroin addict Giles should have known the harm and misery caused by the "insidious trade" of drug trafficking.....hmm cannabis is insidious? eh! no anti-cannabis laws are insidious...Jess

"You were clearly aware of the risk involved in drug trafficking, now you must accept the consequences," he said.

Apart from her guilty plea, Giles showed little remorse and little interest in the particularly young people in the community "whose tragic lives became consumed by drugs of dependence", Judge Robertson said.

...... well it's fucking cannabis a herb not a dangerous drug...Jess

"You have clearly had a most impressive career as an entertainer ... it's particularly sad to see such a talented person before this court on such serious charges.

"This court accepts that by reason of your public prominence as an entertainer you will face public humiliation by the media."

But the judge said Giles's crimes were deserving of stern punishment.... no ,it's your war crimes dog judge that are deserving of stern punishment , your Nuremberg is coming dog! ...Jess

Giles was also fined $2,000.

The court heard the former Australian star had a major depressive illness and suffered a financial blow when she tried to revive her singing career, which contributed to the breakdown of her marriage.

:freak:

I'm surprised she couldn't make bail? ..

Although I'ts not clear the extent of crimes committed .. ?

I think stealing electricity for a Hydroponics setup is a bad idea .. It kinda reveals an intent behind growing aside from just practical and personal use that tends to give a bad image of the accused ..

But locking up a woman pushing 60 , for growing (and even distributing (not necesarily trafficking)) seems to me a little overboard .. :peace:

Hopefully she will only serve a few months at most ..

Stay safe :toke:

Former Queen of Pop jailed

FORMER Queen of Pop Allison Durbin was yesterday jailed for 12 months for trafficking cannabis.

In the County Court, Judge Ian Robertson said that Allison Giles, as Durbin is now known, was a former heroin addict who should have been aware of the dangers of drugs and the misery they caused.

"You were clearly aware of the risk involved in drug trafficking, now you must accept the consequences," he said.

Giles pleaded guilty earlier this week to trafficking and cultivating cannabis, and stealing electricity to power what the prosecution described as a "sophisticated" hydroponic cultivation system.

Five cannabis plants weighing 308 grams were found at the West Footscray home that she shared with her friend and former road manager, John Pigram. Another 67 grams was found in plastic containers.

The court was told Giles grew the cannabis for profit, supplying Joe Barbaro, the convicted drug dealer and father of kidnapped baby Montana.

Scott Johns, for Giles, said the "significant media attention" his client had received had "taken quite a toll on her health".

"As it's often said, such is the price of fame," Judge Robertson said..... WHAT A SMART-ASS PRICK ...Jess

To summarize :

1] Never caught for this before

2] 5 plants

3] 308 grams total for 5 wet plants with stems, leaves and roots and maybe even grow medium,308 grams = 11 ounces EXACTLY ! HMMM how convenient  cops had a big party that night ,lot's of reggae music and hookers

4] 67 grams of dry smoko in a container ,ie. 2 ounces and 11 grams

6] NO BAIL pending JUSTIFIABLE APPEAL over hashness of sentence

7] 1/2 of OzStoners probably have more than this most of the time

8] welcome to your worst nightmare

9] Holy fuck

10] This is very Nazti :xcited:

11] It is the politicians and judges and the police who should be locked up for enacting and enforcing draconian nazi-style discriminatory anti-cannabis laws

dont like this story at all.. fuckall plants really (prob could of claimed personal if didnt get done for 'trafficking'), not a large amount of dried bud really.. but yer stealing electricity and selling to a known dealer prob not the smartest thing.. but sounds like this judge was obviously 'making an example of her' probably just coz she was famous, which sux ass, judge is a wanker.. the sadder thing imo in this case is that she has a depressive illness and has had shit go on in her life but does she get any leniency for that?? or for a first offence?? and is she likely to get the help in jail that she needs with her depression ect?? i doubt it..

It seems strange to me that this judge is supposedly concerned with human misery but is throwing people in jail for growing pot. The mind boggles.

5 plants, what the hell do you need to steal electricity for when you only have 5 plants, what did she have a 600 watt for each plant or something.

She's going to jail for being a tight arse not for growing weed. I got to say I think this women dug her own grave.

Has any one here heard of someone stealing electricity to grow ganja and not getting jail.
