Cannabis almost doubles the risk of fatal car crashes, according to a new study, though smoking the drug is still far less risky than drink-driving, the researchers say. Stoned drivers were almost twice as likely to be involved in a fatal car crashes than abstemious drivers, according to a study of 10,748 fatal car crashes in France between 2001 and 2003. More than half of the drivers in the study themselves died as a result of their accidents and all the subjects were tested for drug and alcohol use after crashing. Even after accounting for factors such as the age of the drivers and the condition of the vehicle, the researchers conclude that cannabis caused a signifi…

Will locals vote to put pot-related enforcement at the bottom of the cops' to-do list? The city of Santa Cruz sure does love its dope. At least that's the assumption Santa Cruz Citizens for Sensible Marijuana Policy are banking on as they work to get an initiative on November's ballot that would make marijuana-related crimes the lowest enforcement priority for Santa Cruz police. "I don't think that responsible adults should be punished for recreational use. And the vast majority of citizens in this city seem to feel the same way," said initiative proponent Craig Reinarman. The initiative follows over a decade's worth of pro-marijuana legislation in the city of Santa…

The 54-year-old still had the trademark long hair that thrilled thousands of male fans in her heyday when she appeared in Melbourne Magistrates' Court yesterday. ONE of the state's most influential doctors has rejected calls for widespread drug tests for doctors, saying they should only be introduced if politicians roll their own sleeves up first. Speaking for the first time since he became the president of the South Australian Medical Board, Dr Trevor Mudge said he saw little point in drug testing doctors. "As soon as we have daily drug testing for politicians we should introduce them for doctors, because after all, they make much more important decisions than we do," Dr Mudge, an obstetrician, said. "The evidence from other countries is that widespread testing of doctors is very expensive and essentially not helpful." Whil…

Perhaps the most compelling reason so many Australians believe Schapelle Corby is innocent is the "selling sand to the arabs" argument: why would anyone smuggle marijuana to Bali when everyone knows it's so easy to get there? While drugs might seem freely available on the streets, the foreigners who live in Bali, including those serving time in Kerobokan jail, say that buying them is a very risky business because you never know if the seller is an undercover police officer or a police informer. For that reason, westerners in Bali are prepared to pay premium prices for marijuana if they can get it from other Westerners, as that's the best way to ensure they are not goi…

POLICE sniffer dogs succumbed to the heat yesterday, only catching 30 Melbourne Big Day Out revellers with small amounts of drugs. The two dogs, called to monitor the Big Day Out for the first time in the event's history, went home after 3 1/2 hours as searing temperatures forced their minders to call it a day. Inspector Paul Tottage said the dogs could not handle the muggy weather. "They just got too hot," he said. "It was too humid for them." The dogs found small amounts of cannabis and ecstasy on patrons. None of those caught with drugs were transferred to police stations, and 11 were placed on drug diversion programs. "The hit rate for the dogs has been rela…

Evidence is mounting that heavy marijuana use can increase the chances of developing severe mental illness for some adolescents whose genes put them at added risk. The link between cannabis and psychosis gained ground this week when two influential medical journals reviewed the research to date and concluded it was persuasive. In PLoS Medicine, Professor Wayne Hall, a public health policy expert at the University of Queensland, wrote that genetically vulnerable teenagers who smoke marijuana more than once a week "appear at greater risk of psychosis". An article in the British medical journal BMJ cited estimates that marijuana could contribute to about 10 per cent of p…

On its journey, OZ Stoners faced formidable challenges. Between Yahoo's unpredictability and the unexpected anti-cannabis stance of titans like Meta, steering the ship required a blend of adaptability, tenacity, and foresight.
A Hiatus and the Phoenix's Ascent
Come 2022, OZ Stoners entered a period of unplanned dormancy, lasting a challenging 12 months. But, reminiscent of the legendary phoenix, this hiatus was transformed into an opportunity for rebirth. The platform underwent comprehensive upgrades, server enhancements, and a revitalising overhaul. As it emerged, it did so with a phoenix-like rise, soaring higher and brighter, dedicated to serving the community with even more zeal and purpose.
Ode to the Trailblazers
The tapestry of OZ Stoners is woven with the dedication and vision of its founding members. Their relentless drive and contributions have been the bedrock of its success. While many of these pioneers continue to shape its direction, we pause to honor those trailblazers we've lost over time. Their indomitable spirit continues to inspire and resonate within the cannabis community. - Memorial Hall
