Lawyers should be drug tested: QC A prominent Melbourne lawyer says there is a drug problem in the legal profession and random drug testing should be introduced. Melbourne QC and former chairman of the National Crime Authority, Peter Faris, says he has information suggesting there is a drug problem in the legal profession in Victoria and NSW. "The information I get from other lawyers, and anecdotally, is that there has been quite a problem with high flyers in the legal profession in NSW and Victoria using cocaine for a number of years," Mr Faris told ABC Radio. Mr Faris said he had seen the effect of drugs on some lawyers he had faced across the bar in court. …

Space will be the final frontier for busting marijuana grow operations in Canada now that police researchers are backing satellite technology that can uncover hidden cannabis plantations. While RCMP weren't hot about the idea a few years ago, a study just completed by the Canadian Police Research Centre shows that police forces would be crazy not to use the technology, if they can afford it. Staff Sgt. Brian Thiessen, who led the recent study in British Columbia, said he was initially told not to bother with the research since it had already been attempted and failed. Using satellite and airborne imagery in the summer of 2006, police researchers were able to find th…

CANNABIS seizures have more than doubled in South Australia, but arrests have increased by only 6 per cent. The national Illicit Drug Data Report released yesterday also shows a massive increase in the amount of amphetamines seized by police, from about 5kg in 2004-05 to more than 66kg in 2005-06. The report from the Australian Crime Commission shows there were more than 500 cannabis seizures in the 2005-06 financial year, compared to 251 the year before. The weight of cannabis seized has also doubled, to almost 8000kg. However, there was only a 6 per cent increase in arrests and a 15 per cent increase in the number of cannabis expiation notices. The overall lev…

Cannabis Dependence by Paul DILLon- What a load of BS by Jess Stone! Cannabis is the most widely used illicit drug in Australia, and in western society in general. Most people use it intermittently, experimenting with it once or twice or regularly over a short period of time. However, some people do experience great problems with the drug and continue to use cannabis even when it begins to have adverse effects on their life. For a long time there was a widespread belief that cannabis was not a drug of dependence and you could not become addicted. This belief was due to an apparent absence of tolerance to the effects of cannabis or of a withdrawal syndrome, particula…

IT is obvious that some people in the northern NSW town of Nimbin have chosen to be deliberately obtuse and are determined not to face the scientific facts about marijuana. How else can their staging of yet another Mardi Grass be interpreted? This event is wrongly called a festival. There is nothing joyous about people gathering to celebrate a drug that has a proven record of triggering psychosis and schizophrenia. The enthusiastic acolytes of marijuana, who will parade up and down the main street of Nimbin this weekend, dare not read the findings of the world's top neurologists in the past decade or those of Antonio Maria Costa, the executive director of the United N…

Police say outback Indigenous drug smuggling growing Police say the trafficking of cannabis and other drugs is on the rise in South Australia's outback Aboriginal communities. More than a year ago South Australian, Western Australian and Northern Territory police created a substance abuse desk so they could work together to stop alcohol and petrol being smuggled into outback towns. Port Augusta police Superintendent Peter Anderson says while the project and the roll-out of Opal fuel has curbed alcohol abuse and petrol sniffing, more people are now turning to other drugs. "Sadly the focus is now moving towards cannabis and other illicit drugs, so the need for our j…
