Monday, May 12, 2008 Harry Clarke http://kalimna.blogspot.com/ (please feel free to post a comment to Harry - at comment 7) This most recent report by the British Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs provides a careful evaluation of cannabis. It recommends retaining the classification of cannabis as a Class C drug (along with valium, GHB and steroids) rather than upgrading it into Class B of more dangerous drugs such as amphetamines and barbiturates. Nevertheless it does describe cannabis use as a significant public health issue. With a few exceptions the report’s views coincide with my views on cannabis. As a Class C drug a maximum prison sentence of 2 years is…

denverpost.com The government's sorta-kinda-maybe logic By David Harsanyi It could be argued that the most useless job in Washington, D.C., is held by John Walters, director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy. He's otherwise known as the country's Drug Czar. And when you consider the spectacular number of useless jobs in Washington, that's quite an accomplishment. No one is saying, of course, that it's easy being a figurehead of a cost-inefficient organization charged with implementing the biggest domestic policy disaster since Prohibition. After all, it means advocating that thousands of non-violent offenders be sent to prison — quite often after…

I don't know any more about these documents than you do as I haven't read them yet myself, but if you have any questions or want to chat to rock send a PM to me or radic and we'll pass it on the next time one of us sees him. actually I haven't checked if this is OK with radic yet, but I'm sure it would be... Scipione wants proof of drugs corruption 1 2

Scipione wants proof of drugs corruption May 6, 2008 - 5:28PM The head of a Sydney drug and alcohol clinic must back up his claims that corrupt police are selling cannabis, NSW's police chief says. St Vincent's Hospital drug and alcohol service director Alex Wodak says criminals and corrupt police control the cannabis market. Dr Wodak argues cannabis should be legalised and distributed by the government, which would then be able to reap the resulting tax revenue. "What's so good about criminals and corrupt police that you'd want them to have a virtual monopoly of cannabis distribution," he said on ABC Radio on Tuesday. NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione…

New centre will fight marijuana May 5, 2008 Public information campaigns will try to counter the high rate of cannabis use among the young, writes Natasha Wallace. Cannabis use and addiction have become such a problem, particularly among the young, that the Federal Government is funding a $12 million research centre at the University of NSW to try to turn the trend around. The National Cannabis Prevention and Information Centre will focus on public information campaigns similar to those tackling tobacco addiction to try to cut the increasingly high rates of cannabis use among the young. The centre's director, Jan Copeland, said the latest statistics showed that …

Post office cannabis idea just plain potty By Harry Clarke Posted 3 hours 42 minutes ago Updated 3 hours 26 minutes ago Cannabis use in Australia is falling, as the recent National Drug Survey shows. (File photo) (ABC News) I wonder what Australia has done to deserve having people in charge of drug treatment services advocating the decriminalisation of illicit drugs such as cannabis. The director of the alcohol and drug service at St Vincent's Hospital, Dr Alex Wodak, proposes selling cannabis in post offices to cut consumption. He made the proposal for taxed and legalised cannabis at the Mardi Grass festival in Nimbin on Sunday (an appropriate site for a medica…

Government set to defy its own experts and upgrade cannabis again! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Government has finally confirmed cannabis is being restored to Class B status - bluntly snubbing the views of its own experts. Home Secretary Jacqui Smith insisted the U-turn was necessary to safeguard "the future health of young people". She also unveiled a crackdown on cannabis "paraphernalia" such as pipes and even potentially posters that "glamorise" its use. However, critics insisted Ms Smith was "crazy" to defy expert opinion, and accused her and Gordon Brown of "dithering" over how to deal with the drug. The P…
