First try at a no dig soil mix

Recommended Posts

I was worried about that too. You never know what's been in there before.

so much effort goes into doing our soil ... so many variables. once everything is in the containers, it's pretty much there for a while. i like the way you're having a good think about each component and process ... it is worth it. :) no-till is front-end loaded ... fair bit of effort in the beginning, but once you've mixed your soil with good ingredients ... it kind of takes care of itself and allows some good quality time to begin plant whispering ... lol .. at least selecting good music while spending quality time around them. :)

i saw a youtube vid with kevin jodrey and he was talking about how he noticed that the more time spent with the plants the more relaxed and nicer people became - he put it down to terpenes. :) he drops some serious knowledge bombs on pain relief and terpene profiles too:

ps: big thx to cardrona for putting up one of kevin jodrey's vids a while ago ... great vid on using fuel strains for people coming off (prescription) opiates for pain relief

If you are maybe a mature person or perhaps have an ailment that prohibits physical activity then that's fair enough.

For the rest of you, look up the meaning of elbow grease.

No need for anything but a shovel and tarp.

Ever mix concrete by hand? Soil is waaay lighter.

One other note on renting mixers, it's the real clean ones you wanna worry about, hcl does a good job of removing concrete from steel with persuasion.

Same could be said of digger buckets if they have handled concrete, which does happen, esp with hire stuff.

Plus, who knows what else people who rents them use them for.

That tumbler looks good, I have looked at them.

Also, as pug said, with the tarp you can spread it all out, then mix back as u pull it all back together with the tarp corners.

You could get 2x 85l pots and transfer 60l back and.forth until it's mixed. Costs the price of the pots and you can still use them.

I am 67 with some health issues which is why I am looking for mechanical assistance.

That said, I am only looking in to it because I want to make sizeable quantities if I am happy with my first batch.

I should have received all my inputs by the end of the week and will be making a 260 litre batch by hand to see how I go.

As I'm retired time is one thing I have plenty of, energy and strength are another matter.

I'm still looking at tumblers, that Ebay one has mixed reviews and I will need it to be robust.

There are some very nice ones about but they are expensive.

I'll make the first batch and then re-evaluate where I go from there.

i'm a jodrey fan as well , posted many vids here from him including this one

How to Make Your Terpenes LOUD and Keep Them That Way https://youtu.be/1vSfPl-3Q5M

that's the one itchy ... it was from you as well mate. :)

great vid ... some serious knowledge presented in a way that kept me awake ... really appreciate people sharing their experience without concern for the dollar. nice to see genuine canna folk that have been involved in the industry for donkeys still sharing. :)

on a separate but related note ... happy with how ozstoners have kept everything on a personal level and overall have avoided commercialization. been on a few forums over the years and that is the quickest way to destroy good will.

still waiting for the day when i go into an oz coffeeshop at night and have a good chat with people from different walks of life - reckon it is coming and reckon there will be such a variety that it will be easy to find one with like-minded and interesting people. :)

nice one ozraptor.:)

just take it nice and easy mate. if you have a nice sativa or sativa hybrid (like congo or jack herer) it can make it actually fun. mixing a 260l batch is big job solo.

if i had the spare cash and had a place where it didn't look too obvious ... i'd take a punt on the 63 or 70l electric mixer. think i found one under $200 delivered ... will check my notes.

the tumbler could be a good bet, if you get a good one. just make sure that it doesn't come in heaps of pieces with heaps of screws like mine did ... farrrk ... drove me nuts putting it together. took a bit of effort to spin once it had a bit of soil in it - probably just bought a dud.:)

not sure if you've mentioned it ... but what strains are you looking to grow?

storage is important due to bugs like fungus gnats

most bagged soils at bunnings are full of gnats cause the bags are stored outdoors

i use second hand 44gal drums , food grade used to transport olive oil in my case

similar to these https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Plastic-Drums-Blue-200-litre-/183499062584?_trksid=p2349526.m4383.l4275.c10#viTabs_0

Unfortunately last year's crop ran out in Jan so I don't have anything other than trimmings at the moment.

I have a grow thread: https://cannabis.community.forums.ozstoners.com/topic/80965-not-what-i-expected/

which I'll update next weekend but I'm planning to harvest a plant grown from a mixed 3 pack I got from Yantra very soon. I also have C99XBlueberry; G13Haze; Caramel Kush and AK47/WW growing. I don't know what I'll grow next year yet. Other than the C99XBB I have seeds left over for next year If I want.

I want to harvest 2 of my plants with a high proportion of clear trich's 1 very soon and a C99/BB in a couple of weeks.

2 with mostly cloudy

and the rest with some amber

to try to give me a variety of stones.

nice one oz :)

like your idea of different stones ...

if you vape, you can also do a bit of fine-tuning with the high as well ... based on the vape temperature. it's no where near as big a difference as trich colour, but still can change a stone from energetic to relaxing with the right strain ... in my case ... lemon skunk from dna seeds.

i've never done it, but have read of some growers who harvest a plant a couple of times, based on the top buds being ready earlier - outdoor growers tend to do it more i think. I suppose that could be done to the same effect to get three different highs from the same plant ... that is, cut some buds off each of your different plants when they are clear, then mostly cloudy and then some with amber. that could give you a way to try each plant from a strain with three different highs.

reckon a few growers would have a bit of experience with this technique.:)

ps ... some lovely strains you've got going there ... that g13haze is powerful stuff. :)
