Tropical trial for hemp crop turns heads 8th September 2008, 6:00 WST The West Australian http://www.thewest.com.au/default.aspx?Men...ContentID=96620 The Ord irrigation region has produced a variety of crops in its 45-year history, but few have attracted as much interest from passers-by, and the occasional police officer, as current trials of Chinese hemp. Reaching 2m, the industrial crop was planted in June by Perth-based Hemp Resources to test its performance in the tropical region. Though similar in appearance to illegal cannabis crops, industrial hemp’s drug-like qualities ended there, managing director Kim Hough said. Under State legislation, licences ar…

A surprise find outside the courthouse RHONDA MARKBY Thursday, 13 November 2008 http://www.stuff.co.nz/timaruherald/4759063a6010.html JUST sometimes police officers really don't have to go out of their way to uncover a crime ... even if the offence took place months earlier. Sergeant Grant Lord stopped to chat to some people sitting at a picnic table outside the Timaru courthouse yesterday. The group were standing around in the sun - looking at the ground. Mr Lord also looked - and plucked himself a healthy looking, 25cm high cannabis plant. The plant was growing at the base of the table. The former drug detective reckoned the specimen was about eight weeks …

The Washington Times Jacob Sullum Saturday, November 15, 2008 Last week, voters in Massachusetts approved a ballot initiative that eliminates criminal penalties for possessing up to an ounce of marijuana, replacing them with a $100 civil fine. Michigan, meanwhile, became the 13th state to allow the medical use of cannabis. As Bruce Mirken of the Marijuana Policy Project noted, the percentage of voters approving those initiatives (65 and 63, respectively) exceeded Barack Obama's share of the vote in each state. Furthermore, the results in Massachusetts and Michigan seem to reflect national opinion. For years polls have indicated that a large majority of Americans t…

Vancouver Sun Ian Mulgrew Vancouver Sun columnist Friday, November 14, 2008Eric Nash can barely contain his excitement waiting to hear from Health Canada whether he can start growing marijuana for 250 patients. That would be just the start. There are tens of thousands more who are ailing across the country clamouring for his organic B.C. bud. "There is a great opportunity here for the government to collect significant tax revenue currently being lost to the street market," Nash, one of the best-known legal cannabis producers, enthused. "With the current global financial crisis, this court ruling is certainly a bright light in dark economic times. We're just wait…

Sorry I thought it desreved its own thread MAPS News - November 2008: Chicago gets MDMA research - Washington gets Vaporized Marijuana Protocol Dear MAPS Members, Supporters, and Friends, It’s the dawn of a new era. We have a lot to celebrate as we welcome President Obama and the tolerant, visionary, and empathetic leadership he represents, and say good-bye to the narrow-minded, unilateral, arrogance that has carried the American banner for the last eight years. I want to publicly congratulate supporters of the Marijuana Policy Project, including Executive Director Rob Kampia and MAPS Alumnus Troy Dayton, for their huge victories for marijuana decriminal…

source Vote Hopes DETROIT - Voters in Michigan overwhelmingly approved a medical marijuana ballot measure -- making it one of a quarter of states to allow severely ill patients to use the illegal drug. With 87 percent of the precincts reporting, 63 percent, or 2,557,410 people, voted "yes" on Proposal 1, which removes state penalties for registered patients to buy, grow and use small amounts of marijuana. Thirty-seven percent, or 1,519,273 voters, were opposed. Opponents again were unable to derail the measure. Nitty.

Hemp harvest in the Ord

ABC Rural 11/11/2008 Western Australia's Ord Valley region has just wrapped up its first hemp harvest in nearly a decade, and the company involved in the trial says it will now look to plant 500 hectares next year. Hemp hasn't been grown in the Kimberley since an unsuccessful trial in 2000, and growers have mixed feelings about the crop's value. Chief executive of Hemp Resources, Kim Hough, believes current legislation, which stops hemp seed from being sold as a food product in Australia, will soon be changed and will make hemp a very viable crop in the Ord. "We're confident that laws will be changed," he says. "But no, it wouldn't turn us away (from growing in …

Tampa Bay Online Sanofi-Aventis, Pfizer End Studies on Diet Drugs LINDA A. JOHNSON, AP Business Writer, TRENTON, N.J. French drugmaker Sanofi-Aventis said Wednesday it is halting all research on a diet drug sold in Europe, Acomplia, and rival Pfizer Inc. hours later said it is ending research on an experimental weight-loss drug in the same class. Both drugs work by blocking the pleasure centers that give marijuana smokers the "munchies" - the cannabinoid type 1, or CB1, receptors. Given that obesity and related complications are arguably the world's biggest public health problem, the demise of both drugs will be a big disappointment for patients and doctors, and possibl…

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/11/06/ca...sychosis_study/ Tim Worstall "There was one vaguely respectable argument that could be put forward on the prohibitionist’s side, that of cannabis induced schizophrenia. This has been increasing even as the general incidence of schizophrenia has been stable (or even falling, depending upon who you ask). That the rise was on the order of 500 people a year means it’s not a very important point, not when compared to 3 million regular tokers, but there are still those who will buy the argument that people should be stopped from harming themselves, even if the risks are very low. There is certainly a correlation, but we should s…
