Topping and Main-lining Techniques question

Recommended Posts

Hi

I stumbled across this YT video

Titled

Topping and Main-lining

I was surprised to see the topping done on a plant so small. Is this topping done at such an early stage with the idea of keeping the plant as short as possible ( one of the reasons ) ?

Thanks

i think most growers (who top) would wait for 6-8 nodes before topping. indicas (like perdro said) can be left to grow a bit bigger to form a good root base and also because final height might not be as big a deal - also 6 nodes on some indica strains makes for a very small seedling. topping is definitely one method of keeping the plant shorter and is a handy tool when trying to grow sativas in a small and short area.

main-lining usually requires at least three toppings (8 colas) and a fair bit of tying down. it goes with the idea that ...  if there is only one stem and if every cola is close to the same distance from the stem, then they should all grow around the same height, as the nutrients/energy will be divided equally. it also usually requires a fair bit of defoliation, which is always interesting. nugbuckets (yep ... that's his name. :)) is credited by many as the grower who made this technique mainstream. there is a good guide here, if you want to check out more info on main-lining and manifolding: https://www.growweedeasy.com/mainlining-nugbuckets

hope it helps :)

ps: those poor topped seedlings in the video look like they are in a cyclone

I just had to play the video again to get the cyclone  reference lol. Now I see what you mean. Yeah that wind is pretty epic

I seen this image https://bestseedbank.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/LOW-STRESS-TRAINING-FOR-MAXIMUM-MARIJUANA-YIELD-1.jpg ,

I am getting the general idea from people when growing Auto's that are Sativa Dom, cutting is not such an issue as it is with Indica's. I guess with shaping and bending, etc , you could have a very low in height plant.

Yes and no.

I didn't really know what I was doing then and had no plan with regard to flowering.

The genetics were DNA and very vigorous. I was in Coco and tent was just dialled in too.

So they got away on me really, one of those plants was tied back down to the manifold too.

Better to just top and bend I reckon
