Carbons No-Till Try Out

Recommended Posts

Built a compost pile Jan 18.

A half arsed attempt, kind of using what I had.

So there was an existing base of horse stable clean outs. So high horseshit and wood shavings, old but dry. Keeping moisture in it has been the main problem.

Built it up in layers of this base with layers of small sticks and twigs and leaves, grass clippings, Lucerne etc.

Then a drip feed of Lucerne and horse shit and various leaves including hardwood leaves.

Stopped adding maybe 8-9months ago. Been tarped a bit, opened up for rain the odd time etc. Had tarp off and it grew a lush cover of weeds. These were mixed in at the latest mixing. I was slack mixing it at the start but wanted it to break down, I was confident the layers would provide some aeration.

Still a bit dry and perhaps lacking organic matter.

Cut to the other day. 14 months later.

Had it opened up expecting rain, didn't come, heaped it back up, 32mm overnight.

Helped though but you can see how much it permeated through.

I mixed it up and am expecting more rain hopefully.

So I have potted up some ivory curl plants into 30l of this stuff. Haven't died yet.

Last one is corn in 85l of my own mix.

Grows big. Had a bad germination with the beans but have a few in these ones.
