The Independent Jeremy Laurance, 9 February 2009 Just how dangerous is cannabis? Almost a year ago, the Prime Minister announced tougher new laws on cannabis possession, uprating it from a Class C to Class B drug, because of increased fears about the risks posed by Britain's most popular illegal substance. His move, reversing a decision to downgrade the drug taken four years earlier, came in response to reports that the country was in the grip of an epidemic of cannabis-induced psychosis. Headlines claimed that the cannabis sold on the streets was 20 to 30 times stronger than in the 1970s and was tipping increasing numbers of vulnerable people into mental illnesses su…

More and more people are finding themselves able to kick sometimes long-term, damaging and expensive alcohol habits without any of the uncomfortable symptoms of withdrawal which normally comes with long-term addictions, and they are doing it thanks to cannabis. Ninety-two Northern Californians using cannabis as an alternative to alcohol obtained letters of approval from the author - Physician Tod Mikuriya MD. Their records were reviewed to determine characteristics of the cohort and efficacy of the treatment —defined as reduced harm to the patient. All patients reported benefit, indicating that for at least a subset of alcoholics, cannabis use is associated with r…

Guns blazing as they head for the exit, the Bush gang has blasted the hopes of Lyle Craker, a UMass Amherst botany professor who applied in June, 2001 for a DEA license to grow marijuana for FDA-approved medical research. On Jan. 12 Craker got a formal letter of denial from DEA Administrator Michele Leonhartt. Mahmoud ElSohly of the University of Mississippi remains America's only legal grower, as far as the feds are concerned. Some of the destructive regulations promulgated by Bush in recent months may be reversible, but the DEA's rejection of Craker appears to be final. Lawyers are exploring the appeal options, according to Rick Doblin, who organized legal and politic…

Hello everyone, this thread should be the perfect opportunity for me to introduce myself to the CN community (I've always been fond of you), and to discuss a little issue that has been tackling my existence lately. I am 22, doing my final years of uni in the field of IT. I never knew anything about MJ until the day I landed in Australia. The college students scene can be scary to the grownups, because I reached a point that I wanted nothing but isolation from this particular group. The main reason is that, most or many of the college students attending where I study, are party freaks in some way. You have Chase, the binge drinker who lives meters away, drinking daily fr…

German Study: Marijuana Users at Risk for Personality Disorders 22 December 2008 DW-WORLD.DE http://www.dw-world.de/dw/article/0,,3894768,00.html Marijuana smokers tend to be more at risk for psychological problems. German researchers are warning that using marijuana can have serious psychological side effects. Men who use cannabis risk becoming antisocial while women often become depressed and insecure. Cannabis users between 17 and 30 years are at greater risk of developing multiple types of personality disorders than non-smokers in the same age group, a German study found. Cannabis also effects women differently than men, the study published in the German psych…

Sanjay Gupta: What the Next Surgeon General Doesn't Know About Pot Russ Belville, NORML 8 January 2009 Alternet http://www.alternet.org/healthwellness/118...t_/?page=entire The next surgeon general needs to stop putting politics before science. Gupta may not be ready for that. Tools If Dr. Sanjay Gupta is picked for the post of surgeon general, he would become the nation's leading medical advocate. His experience in the media would be beneficial in bringing the Surgeon General's office back to the prominence it held when C. Everett Koop was successfully battling tobacco smoking. But is Gupta ready to deliver the Obama administration's promised end to the politicizat…

I know this sounds very dramatic, but I had an idea last night that really got me thinking. I'm sure your all aware of the governments idea to genetically isolate the pain killing attributes of pot as a form of pain killers. As i was munching into a salad my friend made whilst stoned, I realised how friggen awesome it tasted. Now I'm not the guy who typically eats salad unless I'm forced too. haha. So then it struck me. Why can't they isolate the component of pot that makes stuff taste so good. Pot makes things taste good, I've never met a person who have said food tastes 'worse' while stoned. I shared this with the group i was with and one of them posed a question,…
