Ben Cousins and the evil nasty drugses

Recommended Posts

lol Not sure about football, but about Ron Paul...he'll never make the primaries, neither will Bill Richardson the Gov. from New Mexico that signed that states med pot bill and said it was the right thing to do... The rotten to the core government in the US will choose who THEY want regardless of who we vote for (ie Al Gore) .

I think that if Americans had any sense, or balls, all the old hippies that demonstrated against vietnam, and are now AARP members should rise up and kick some ass one last time! AARP is the most powerful group in the country (along with the NRA).

The world is going to hell on the express... lol lol :P

I gotta tell you, I'm fairly encouraged by the investigation done by many reporters working the Cousins story. Cousins has a pretty good attorney, too.

There's some real heat on the WA Police. Cousins' counsel, Shane Brennan, raises some valid points, notably the cops' disclosure in a press conference regarding 'traces' of drugs on a $20 note in the possession of one of Cousins' passengers. These traces of drugs, even if this information is true, would not have led to any sort of charge or conviction. Brennan's accusation of a police smear holds a fair bit of water.

This story comes from one of the normally very anti-drug News Ltd papers:

Article from: The Sunday Times

COLLEEN EGAN, in PERTH

October 21, 2007 12:15am

EXCLUSIVE: BEN Cousins was the victim of a smear campaign by WA police who wanted to deflect attention from their incompetence, his lawyer claims.

Shane Brennan has launched a scathing attack on police, who were forced to admit a mistake and drop a drugs charge against Cousins on Friday.

Mr Brennan said there was no valid reason for the police to hold a press conference detailing the painkillers, Viagra, sedatives and a $20 banknote with traces of ecstasy and cocaine found in the car driven by Cousins.

He challenged the police to lay charges if they believed Cousins had done any wrong, apart from the ``minor traffic matter'' that he was confident of defending.

"As far as the police press conference is concerned, in my opinion it was a calculated and sinister diversionary tactic by the Police Service to shift the focus from their incompetence,'' Mr Brennan said.

"The information disclosed was highly prejudicial and clearly sought to infer further criminality on my client's behalf.

"If their motives were other than to smear and besmirch my client, why have they not already charged him in regards to these matters?

"It is highly damaging and such material should not be released or published unless it is to be the subject of a criminal charge.''

Mr Brennan said the announcement that the police had found Viagra, a sex-aid drug, was particularly sinister.

"Why mention Viagra?'' he said.

"The mention of Viagra in the vehicle is simply designed to demean him and it's entirely gratuitous. It could never form the basis of a criminal charge.''

Mr Brennan said no adverse inference could be drawn from the sedatives or painkillers found in the car, which belonged to one of Cousins' sponsors.

He said it was "interesting'' that police only divulged that the $20 note was in the possession of one of Cousins' passengers after questioning by journalists.

Mr Brennan said he could not comment on why the police organised crime squad conducted the traffic stop or whether his client had been under surveillance.

"I'm aware of no reason why my client was apprehended by the Organised Crime Squad as opposed to any other division of the Police Service,'' he said.

"All that remains is a minor traffic offence.''

Mr Brennan said he was confident of defending the remaining charge. He said he had already advised Cousins to get specialist legal advice on his contract with the West Coast Eagles, which sacked the star midfielder after his dramatic arrest and charge.

"In my opinion, West Coast acted precipitously,'' Mr Brennan said.

"The proposition that these charges _ of which one has now disappeared _ were the straw that broke the camel's back ignores the presumption of innocence. It's incomprehensible.

"I've advised my client to pursue all legal avenues open to him in respect of the repercussions of the police actions, and I'm hopeful of a positive outcome.''

Assistant Commissioner Wayne Gregson refused to directly address Mr Brennan's allegations, but released a statement through a spokesman: ``Assistant Commissioner Gregson stands by the comments he made and is happy to be corrected by Mr Brennan or his client if they believe anything he said was not accurate.''

AFL to toughen drugs code

THE AFL will toughen its drug code for players in the wake of the Cousins affair, federal Sports Minister George Brandis said yesterday.

The Howard Government has demanded that all sports in Australia, including the AFL, embrace a ``one chance and you're out'' policy for illicit drugs.

It is understood the Federal Government now expects the AFL will fall into line.

On Thursday, AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou committed the AFL to a review of its drug policy after Cousins' arrest.

Seems like the Eagles just may have seriously- and potentially very expen$ively in Cousins' case, considering his future earnings potential- jumped the gun.

Woddya think? Will the Eagles pay out or take Cousins back? It's one or the other!

Can picture it now, someone within within West Coast Eagles management knew Ben wasn't clean and wanted him ousted before it all come out again. Tryin' to wash their hands of him by tipping off the fuzz. Well, look at it now, it's all gone pear shape on em. lol

Jojo, don't worry about the taxpayers money that Ben (fuckwit in your words) maybe able to claim, As it'll be a mere pittance to what the coppers spend on this "War on Drugs". This'll be a good wake up call for all 'n taxpayers and can see what a waste it really is.

Imagine if they put that money towards health 'n education....

lol

I bet you're not wrong. Pear-shaped is just the beginning.

Yeah... the drug war really is a massive waste of everyone's time.

But speaking of time, a very important standard is being established here- like what a person's employer's rights are to tell you what you can do in your off-hours.
