Nimbin man allegedly carried drugs during drug trial

A MAN who says he uses drugs for pain relief pulled out a bag of suspected cannabis in a Brisbane court room today while appearing on drug possession charges.

Police seized the bag after searching Peter Till, 39, of Nimbin in northern NSW, during an adjournment of the trial at the Brisbane Magistrates Court.

The contents have yet to be analysed and no charges were laid immediately.

Till was on trial for drug possession after he took a 90cm tall cannabis plant into the same court complex on January 8, 2007.

Till, a supporter of cannabis legalisation, claimed the plant was to be used as evidence to prove the drug was not dangerous.

During closing argument today - the second day of the summary hearing - he pulled from his pocket and placed on the bar table a clipseal bag containing green leafy material and a large pre-rolled cigarette.

Representing himself in the trial, Till told the court he was on a disability pension for back, hand and eye pain, and that he used cannabis on a daily basis for pain relief.

Till had requested an adjournment of the proceedings in August so he could self-medicate for a headache.

Magistrate Zac Sarra today found Till guilty of possession of a dangerous drug, saying he was satisfied Till did not have a lawful reason to possess the drug.

He sentenced Till to a two-month wholly suspended sentence.

As he left the court, Till was arrested and taken to the police watchhouse over allegations he had failed to perform community service as ordered for an earlier drugs offence.

Sometimes you have to be a bit of a realist... it's hard to campaign from the pokey.

But you know what... that line there pretty much sums up why we are all in this position. This guy has the right idea. Now if only he could get a couple of hundred people to turn up and follow him into the courts doing the exact same thing you could start getting a bit of a message across!

There will be a lot of pain before we see any gain but the sooner the better! Too bad im not in qld bud... i would come help ya!

my sentiments precisely....if we used this guy as a role model ..if hundreds..nay thousands!! of average blokes just said fuck u coppers..fuck u politicians...and ten thousand people all take weed into court...it would gain a lot of publicity nationally and internationally....(even if its censored from tv..luckily the censorship of the internet is a lot more difficult) which would help the global legalisation of cannabis...which helps legalisation in OZ...remember think global act local?..

..but will we?....i doubt it....fear will stop most of us...(me included)..and yet....to turn a dream of legalisation into a reality within a reasonable time frame (5 years)...it takes action..which requires courage...and often a figurehead/martyr..eg martin luther king...cause the fact is pamphlets and written words just wont cut it....its not a strong enough step..we need a reefer revolution!!

for example...get a hundred marijuana legalisation hard core types...ring a couple of tv stations and tell 'em there is gonna be a hundred people smoking marijuana outside the local copshop today at 2pm(dress up in silly costumes and/or do other highly visual stunts that would look good on a 30seconds tv clip)....repeat this stunt and similair types at monthly intervals..use the internet to advertise and plan 'our' sides battle strategy in the 'war on drugs'...theyve largely given up on the war on drugs cause they all foused on the 'war on terror' nowadays..therefore victory may well be easier than we believe.

..so keep it up u brave aussie battler...power to the people and all power to u and if u do go to gaol or u are killed or tortured or brainwashed (unlikely u say...perhaps...perhaps not!!...)....u will have inspired us less brave souls in our war against the government..war on drugs...is actually war against drug users(us..the people)..so in effect the government our 'servants' are waging war on the people they claim to represent...ah its a weird world we live in....peace, truth and bongs to y'all..
