Buffering Brick Coco

Recommended Posts

I have only just started using the Bunning's Brick Coco. Previous to this I have always used pre buffered Coco.

This is what I started to do with the Brick Coco and 7 weeks in I really cant tell the difference between the $35 Bag of Canna Coco i have used for the last 10 years and the $2 Brick Stuff I'm using now.

1. Put the Bricks in a large pot with drain holes and pour 2 Jugs of Boiling Water to make it expand for about 10 minutes.

2. I flood it with Tap water (0.25 EC) around 4 or 5 times until the run off becomes clear. I don't bother getting the PH of the water right. I estimate I put through around 20 liters of water to get to this point.

3. I mix up 2 ml per liter of Calmax (2-0-0) with my Tap Water (0.25 E.C.)....Total E.C. around 1.4..I then correct the PH to 5.8....I then flush it twice with this mix......Around 5 liters of nutrient.

4. I then leave it overnight or longer to drain and soak.

From there I just flood it with my Nutrient and It's ready to use for growing. I'm still not perfectly happy with it straight out of the Gate.

Looking for feedback and ideas to possibly even make it better....Anyone have anything to add?

Do you buffer with a higher PH or use Nutes with the mix or what?

As a Buffering Nutrient or a Growing Nutrient...I've looked at the NPK and Composition of the Powerfeed and it looks fine for a Grow Nutrient.

So you reckon a just buffer it with Nutrient instead of a heavy CalMag

Just be careful with the consistency of those bricked coco from bunnings, I've had some with a very small particle size that just held far too much water.

Good point Frank...I think I'll go back to what I started with a few years ago....Coco 80% Worm Castings 10% Rice Hulls 10% and maybe Buffer with a 50% 50% mix of Cal Mag and Feed Nutrient and just water it down the around 1.5 E.C. I might be overdoing it by using calmag and nothing else.

Some of my best Grows were using Worm Castings in the Coco and I only just started using the Rice Hulls not that long ago as a substitute for Perlite...Never liked the idea of Perlite anyway...Its great for Airation by it comes at the expense of Nutrient availablity unless you feed it multiple times a day, and I cant be fucked with that

Here ya go... I use the brunnings coir from Bunnings as well, I don't flush and I've never used calmag in my life.

Ok...I dont know who you are so forgive me if I sound suspect. Can you show me a photo of something towards the end of life you have grown as described and what you use to feed with.

No good just showing up as a hero and saying I don't do fuck all and I do just fine, with not a single aspect of what you really do.

Flushing is totally different to buffering so straight way I call BS

What are you talking about

Whats a buffering nutrient ?

Seasol a root tonic, doesn't buffer anything
