Can Carbon filter remove smell of smoke and clean the air?

Recommended Posts

hi spider … no worries mate. :)

as to the set up … i’ll explain my set up a bit more clearly and reckon it can be modified for your fan and cf pretty easily.

i put the phresh filter on the ground with the cf collar facing upwards … i then turn the canfan rs on it's side and place its collar on the collar of the cf and use tape to secure it and prevent air loss - placed so that the fan is sucking through the carbon filter. then i place the collar of the square plate (with the hepa filter taped to it) on to the other rs fan collar. basically, the air is sucked through the cf and then is passed through the hepa filter. i make sure that the air direction arrow (where the air enters the hepa filter) is face down on the square plate. please see below some links and pics - apologies for not including a real pic … unfortunately, everything has been packed and stowed away over the summer.

you can buy the hepa filter from these places:

the collar with the square plate that i use to attach the hepa filter to, is similar to these ones (it was sold at a hydro shop, but reckon any ventilation place will have them in stock):

if possible try to get one that has a square plate slightly larger than the dimensions of the hepa filter … not a huge issue … just easier to tape to. also, make sure that the collar will fit your ducting diameter. if possible, also nice to use a low voc tape.

for your set up … it might be easier to put your cf on the ground … attach ducting from your cf to your fan (maybe placed on the ground too) … attach ducting from your fan to the collar of the square plate (with hepa filter taped on). that way you can direct the outgoing (clean air) more easily. :)

hope it is clear mate … if not, just let me know and i’ll have another crack.

will try to modify the post with pics of the bits and bobs ...

as to masks … reckon porky’s on to something here … always good to have something portable … just in case.

i’ve used these ones doing various shitty, dirty jobs and have found them to be very effective and don’t restrict breathing too much:

never bought from these people, but might be helpful:

this site is pretty good for air pollution info, if interested … also has some good info about air filters and diy air purifiers:

Well, I didn't find the information that carbon filter can remove smell of smoke and clean the air. But I found the information that ozone generators are one of the best things that you can use to remove odors and help with mold and pests. Ozone is highly reactive toward organic material, so it means that it affects microbes like bacteria and viruses. All information about the ozone generators I found at this platform damagecontrol-911.com. Personally I have used this device and I can recommend it. I had a house that I smoked in for about three years and I sold it a few months ago. The real estate agent didn't like the smell of smoke, so I used the ozone generator and the result was great. The smell of cigarette disappeared at all and we had sold our house in one week at the asking price.

Guess what else is organic material? People. People are organic and to quote NSW Health...

"The ozone layer in the upper atmosphere helps filter out damaging ultraviolet radiation from the sun, but ozone in the air we breathe is irritative to the eye, nose, throat and lungs and can have a significant negative impact on health."

Ozone isn't an effective air cleaner...

"Health experts warn that it is important to control conditions to ensure that no person or pet becomes exposed to high levels of ozone. Ozone also masks the odour of some pollutants by impairing a person's sense of smell.

Further, ozone is not effective for killing bacteria or mould in materials such as air conditioning duct lining and ceiling tiles."

I'm glad you sold your house, but ozone is not a very safe or effective way of controlling the indoor environment.
