which light for a newbie

Refer to the dozens of heated lighting arguments around here mate. Some guys like hps, some guys like cmh, some guys love led. Research which is best for your setup in regards to fans, cooling heating etc, pick a winner and go with it.

315 cmh Phillips about your budget. Or a 400 watt COB. I'd get a 315 cmh. Save for a bit and splash $200-300 on a mars 400 watt panel led. These two lights will be enough for you 1.2 m tent.

 

Keeps things cool and not too expensive. I've been using COB and mars led panels but may as well go CMH as well.

I just bought "LUMATEK ULTIMATE 600W/ 400V HPS - 500MM PEBBLE SHADE-PHILLIPS GREENPOWER 600W /400V EL GLOBE Kit" from glandore.

Came in underr 500 bucks.

I have a 1x1x2 tent and did have a 400W in it that just shit itself. Your tent is bigger so would be fine heat wise.
