State of Origin - The Great Sal Grow Off!

Tunkers

Recommended Posts

Put it this way.. It's not viable to make them for sale because people wouldn't pay the price that would make the venture profitable.

For instance..

$10-$15 in timber

3-4 hours running a 1/2hp motor on the lathe

3-4 hour labour

$5 - $10 for sandpaper, etc..

$10-$15 Postage & Handling

A rounded off figure I would put it at $150 a piece Which no one is going to part with. :D

So this is purely a love job. In fact, it's unfortunate that they're are made out of Oregon. Because 5 years ago I set aside a fallen branch I got from a Silky Oak. It would've been ideal to use about now, but the bloody termites beat me to it.

Bummer would of looked at getting myself one, Great work [emoji106]

Yup, it sucks that it blows out to that. It'd would've been nice to get them down to an acceptable price to meet the market. Because I could punch the odd one while having coffee & cones, and earn a bit of pocket money along the way. :D

Keep an eye out at the markets though, as you might be fortunate to see odd cheap Asian ones they have for like $10-$15 a piece, only problem with them is they have a flat bottom in them, where the ones that I make have this well rounded bowl shape that works great at getting every last spec out of the bowl with ease. In inner bowl itself is where I put in most of the effort to get it just right. ;)

Indy around Paddington they would happily pay that price. Heaps of timber around these days from all the old houses that are being torn down to make way for appartments.

Dad used to make Gollywog wooden key rings and sell them at Salamanka market on the lathe. The tourist trade loves that kinda thing.

Finally got there.. The winners will have to paint, varnish, stain or wax their own. Because I don't paint. My original one never got a coat of anything, and it fared well over the 20 odd years, so it'd be fine to leave it as is if you don't mind the workshop/weathered look..
