I reckon the only way you might get down to 20-30% without motor noise would be using a variable transformer speed controller - rather than an electronic one. Never done it myself and they are not cheap:

pug i would actually pay that price but the second one of the two looks better price wise lol, can u tell me how these work or why they are better than the normal grow lush fan speed controller? with using one of these that u linked is there possibility of fan catching fire?

OK looked around and it seems those expensive transformer fan speed controllers run the fan in the on position 100% of the time, the cheap nasty fan speed controllers like i have from grow lush turn the fan on than off than on again though out the running process which i am lead to believe is what burns out a fan and also makes it hummm

I have tried a few cheap fan speed controllers, grow lush and the like,

and they all have the low hum noise when turned down to 20-30%

i run 200mm cunti fan with the variable transformer speed controller dialled down to 30% power, pulling air through carbon filter,

no hum, works a treat, have been running it this for a couple of years now, no problem what so ever(touch wood).

i have the one in my link, plug n play from Jaycar, best $$ i ever spent, very happy with it.

I will get either the one from JC or RS i don't mind wiring up a couple cords to save a hundred bucks but u can't really beat plug and play, i would love to have one right now but funds are low atm, I'm pumping 500 cubic meter's an hour thru a 90x50x180cm tent its way over kill so if i can back the fan speed down it will help with what little noise is there and it should allow the fan to last a bit longer without burning out

i have one of those Grow Lush speed controllers they would be good for a fan without a start/run capacitor like on axle fans
