Yeah, for sure, make your own custom unit rather than buying one you are unlikely to understand or run properly. These companies survive on selling expensive kits to those who don't need to buy them.

 

You'll also learn a heck of a lot more about construction, growing, and plants in general by building your own GR and hydroponics system. For a good grounding in the subject of hydro, consider taking a trip to the library and learning about it from some books. The principles, whether growing an annual vegetable or an annual pot crop are the same.
