H&G No aeration of Res?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I keep hearing how great H&G is so thought I'd do a litle research before giving it a go and found on their website they recomend NOT aerating the res.... WTF? Under the FAQ section on their US site they state:

How is the nutrient container prepared with House and Garden nutrients?

When preparing the nutrient container, fill it two-thirds with water. First add Aqua Flakes A; circulate well and wait 10-15 minutes. Then add Aqua Flakes B; circulate well and wait for 10-15 minutes. Adjust the pH-value of the nutrient with pH- (Down) or pH+ (Up). Add any root, growth or flowering stimulators. Your nutrient mixture is ready to water. Notice: Do NOT add Aqua Flakes A&B at the same time, as this triggers a chemical reaction in the nutrient resulting in sediment, incomplete nourishment and clogged piping. Contrary to what you might have heard with other nutrients, never use an oxygen pump in the nutrient container or in the growth table. This may have serious consequences for the stability of the nutrients. Ensure that your EC, PPM, and PH pens are well calibrated when preparing the nutrients.

Anybody know anything about this? Could have some truth to it when running a flood and drain 12x5min?

Heya Nici =) , yeah gotta agree with Naycha. I have been using H&G Cocos for a couple of years now, the nutes are pretty stable but you just have to be careful with the Root Excelorator and the New Amino Treatment , especially the latter. These products contain living bacteria that are Anerobic, adding high air levels to resi will make them die. I have noticed when ya aerate it a sludge will form, may be these bacteria dying and dropping out of solution? I'm workin on this one..........lol

I dont use a reciculating system, I'm run to waste in Coco, but I don't aerate my resi once the RE or AT has been added.

I now aerate the water for 24 hours, then turn off and mix nutes up, then just to be on the safe side, I just circulate them with a tiny water pump.

I am trying to find some more info, and just make sure you get your info from the Dutch H&G site........because that Q and A is pretty dodgy...they dont even tell you to add the other 1/4 to resi before adding part B......just sorta skipped over it...lol . Peace . Nibbler.

Hey guys thanks for the replies so far. Nibbler the sludge could be from the waste of the bacteria, any idea if the res releases methane with the Root Excelorator or New Amino Treatment?

So it sounds like everyone is pretty happy with H&G then.... Might give it a go

I havent noticed a methane smell, but Amino T does stink. lol. I'll talk to some mates about it from Holland, as I also want to find good dosage rates for the Amino T as 20-100ml isn't really very specific ......lol ........ peace. Nibbler.

i am running roots excel in my dwc at the moment but its hard to tell because im also running piranha bennies however i get both a brown foam and a smell from my res. its not a root rot smell though and roots seem happy so im going to persevere for now. i have never done this before but i think its worth experimenting with bennies as i have seen some awesome results

hi mate grey foam is caused by the amino treatment i use a mixing pump instead of a airator pump foam is stopped.

foam will cause no harm to the plants its just the organic nature of the product.

i contacted H&G Australia the guys are very helpful and where happy to sort out my issues and questions. i would say send them a email with your concerns.
