Bug eating outdoor seedlings

Recommended Posts

pyrethrum is ok. comes from a marigold type flower grown in south africa ... altho I understand there is a synthetic around too because the flower is always in short supply ... but what can you do when experts rule the world? no matter how it was made pyrethrum is the best choice. was worried you would powder the place with ddt or something! good luck!

ahahah man i went to check up on my biggest seedligns they were doin pretty good, i thought they wouldn't get munched any more but its first 5 blade leaves got munched abit, bloody heartbreaking loll, I just don't understand i sprayed em with beat a bug, threw snail and slug pellets every, what more can a human being do lmfao, anyhows i repotted it in a bigger pot and put a dome in it, im a little sad though cause in the transition of the potting i distrurbed so many roots but ill update some pics in a day or two to show you the results, but on a rather positive notes all the other seedlings with the DIY domes which I created are doing good. The only thing im worried about is what to do when the seedlings get to big for the dome which will probs be around 20cm max, will bugs still chomp em or do I have to think of an even more creat3ive method to stop the damn bugs. Cheers for the replies.

Thats intresting to know but I have one question, when the seedlings are sprayed with insecticide or snail pellets are put down does it take some time for the poison to kick and there for allowing the insects feast on your plants then they die or does the pesticide sprayed on the plants taste like crap for them and there for leaving the seedling in peace and harmony?

Shroomyshroom I reckon thats the best idea but its not possible for me as every time i grow seedlings at home my dad always ends up ripping it out, ahahah i learnt my lesson when my parents, uncle and auntie ganged up on me in my backyard and made me rip out a beautiful purple 1 plant which was about 2 feet tall in December, in my vegetable patch, I had put my blood and sweat into that beauty and they made me rip it out and put it in the bloody rubbish bin. Saddest day of my life but thats what happens when your parents come from foreign countries and have very little or no idea about how the legal system works and they think that with one plant the police are gonna chuck you in goal. I woudn't really get that angry every time my seedlings die but its abit of a trek to get to my grow as ive lost my license and every time I go and theyve been eating i go insane but i guess thats the name of the game.

yeah i thought it might be earwigs but theres not much places for em to hide around the pots cause there up high but im not sure but, im thinking i might get a paint brush and paint like a ring of oil around the pots preventing anything from climbing onto the pots but im scared the oil drips down and gets near the pots drainage system and the soil absorbs it but ill keep use posted, but if it earwigs what preventative measures can you take?? Cheers

re pyrethrum: I think taste and smell senses are linked for insects as they are for us. the pest will know straight away not to eat it.

I 'm amazed re this thread. I mean the amount of difficulties people can have with their seedlings. here I don't plant them, I just chuck the seed out in the garden ... rain or no rain ... and on the next rain they come up, and nothing but grasshoppers, which aren't often around, eat them! (ok, so I often have plenty of seed.)

so I 'm thinking yr growing environment is not healthy somehow ... ? too much man made rubbish around ... rotting stuff? has the area been regularly sprayed with roundup? very bad. heavily fertlised with lawn fertilizer? almost as bad.

can you get hold of some hay and thickly mulch the area for a metre or so around? I 'm thinking you need to shield yr little project from whatever's the matter with that ground.

demistify Im not sure if the environment is healthy or not. All I know is the council is trying to rejuvenate that part of the little amount of bush they have left near suburbia. Its around houses but as far as i can see within the bush it looks pretty normal. There are the random bongs hear and there and rubbish, but the ground looks like it has alot of plantation growing, alot of bull ants, normal gum trees, bottom line its not a dump. My teacher once told me Sydney as the hardest place to grow in Australia. He said to many insects and shit. But dno man like I just wish i could one day see what sucker was crawling over my babies but I think what ever it is it comes out at night. I rekon even if i threw a million seedlings in this place none of em would make it. By the way if i did mulch the area up how does that prevent bugs?
