Advice On Venting The Orange Box

Recommended Posts

Hey crew

I have been away for a while, thought it was about time to get growing again so have been making some much needed investment in my little box, just painted it orange (essential haha! ), added a soft door for light proofing and a cool tube.

What I have got is:

750mm x 600mm x 110mm grow box

250mm ball bearing exhaust fan in the roof of box

250 Watt HPS

150mm cool tube with a 125mm PC fan blowing up through ducting into the exhaust fan

mesh screen for SCROG (not in photos)

mech timer with the contactor setup (thanks Bufo!)

So to the problem!

I want the box to be more stealth as it currently looks like a time machine with the HID light making its way through the exhaust fan and swirling around my bedroom ceiling, it also lacks odor control and sounds like a jet turbine.

So what I want to do is ditch the exhaust fan, install an odor sok (150 X 600) in the top of the box followed by a fan, then duct through the cool tube and out of the box near the top somewhere.

This should light proof it, sort out that beautiful yet dangerous smell and hopefully keep it cool.

What I cant decide on is what type of fan and or the number of fans required to push adequate volumes through the setup.

According to cannaversity i need to move 18cf or 510L per minute .

A 150mm centrifugal on a fan controller may be the ideal for pushing air but they are so damn fat I will struggle to find a spot.

150mm inlines are therefore preferable.

Would one be sufficient to handle my requirements?

If so what brands are recommended?

Anyone have experience with them pulling through an odorsok and 3 metres of ducting?

Greeny, Sorry dude, ya thread must of got lost in here somewhere. :scratchin:

Mate I used Odor sok , they work just make sure you re-activate them regularly. For a 250 HPS HID and that area I would go 125-150mm Centrafugal Fan(if you want to run 3m of ducting, otherwise use computer style inlines if they are powerful enough, heaps cheaper) and a 125-150mmm x 500mm Sok. Carbon filters are better but depends how much $$ you have, also mate get a small computer style fan for your cooltube and have air coming in to the box through one duct from outside the box, thru the tube and out the other duct to the outside of box with the fan running inline, works heaps better. Hope this helps mate and sorry no-one got back to you. :peace: Gh72

I've used an odorsok with a long run of ducting, and if you have the budget I'd say use a carbon filter. Either way I would use a 250mm centrifugal with a duct splitter which will split the duct into 2 x 150mm. That way with the one fan you can pull air through the cooltube and also exhaust your box. One fan will also be easier to soundproof.

Thanks for the advice guys

A 150mm x 600mm odor-sok is already on the way. I checked out some carbon filters at the local hydro store but even the 'smallest' was too big for my vertically challenged box.

Naycha, I like your idea about the splitter but am worried the air would take the path of least resistance and favour the cooltube over the filter and exhaust?

I will start hunting around for a 150mm can fan.

Cheers

Just an update for anyone interested.

I ended up getting a 150mm mixed flow fan from FansDirect.

It is a hybrid of a centri and an axial. The benefits of using this for me was that it is much more compact than a centri, cheaper and has two speeds.

It sucks through the odor sok which is hung from the top of box, then through the cool tube and pushes the air out into my wall cavity.

I have been using it on high speed, temp stays around the 26 to 30 mark depending on outdoor air temp. No air con in room.

With next grow I will run at night and attempt the lower speed to save power and keep noise down a bit more so I can sleep =)

Here is my lone little bag seed planty. Not sure how old she is but I think she will be ready to pick around new year.

Her friends were all hermy so they got the cut, 'she' had some balls as well so I just neutered what I could and it seems to have turned out ok, not too many seeds.

Shes small but should almost get me through the auto ak x hindu kush grow I got planned.
