Alcohol vs. Marijuana

Recommended Posts

For the last year or so I was thinking that things are bound to start changing 'cause so many people I know believe, as I do, that cannabis is not only a better drug than alcohol and tobacco in regards to health concerns but also a better drug for everyone, including the government in regards to the financially troublesome times that we find ourselves in. Surely we must be pushing our way into the majority by now.

But then I realised that it seems like a majority simply because the majority of people I like to hang out with have the same sort of opinions as me, but we're still very much a minority of the whole. Basically, this is because there hasn't been a single major national or international educational shift. Think of how much money is spent during elections on advertising, so that politicians can hiss and spit at each other and act like two-year-olds in front of the nation. If our movement had the kind of money spent on just one political party's smear campaigns, then we could do incredible things.

I find it outright insulting that so much money is spent by people to lie and deceive their way to power, when it could be put to such good use; education of agenda-less facts and righting of injustices for instance.

Sorry to be a broken record, but this -I believe- is the greatest misnomer of the cannacommunity.

Admittedly, most smokers have limited perspectives in that all their friends (and some associated workpeople or rellies) are pro-smokers.

But then you watch the news, read the papers, talk to an ignorant old-person and Oh! WTF, everyone still believes the weed is evil.

Yet seriously, wake up. Feel the growing sentiment.

Talk to a wide RANGE of people.

People you wouldn't ordinarily talk to about your personal habits of ingestion.

Unless your an extremist mother****** (which admittedly, a few too many substance-users still are) you'll find they're quite sympathetic towards you and the cause in general.

No one likes undue repression.

And everyone knows a smoker or two.

They don't REALLY think it turns you into an evil rapist after two puffs

On the same lines, I only know a couple of people (amongst thousands) who actually believe with conviction what current affair, newspapers and the nightly news in general have to tell them.

They know it's a crock!

There is no problem except those created in the mind.

yeah i dont see that as a hippie comment, i agree and believe it to be a fundamental truth

And I reckon riding the medicinal bandwagon is a bit of a cop out.

Being a " medical user " i still agree, lately more than ever are the lines blurring and disappearing for me, like yeah its just an excuse to try get around all the bullshit.

As was said, not even god can tell us what to ingest (thus the allegory of eve's apple-offering and the 'fall of man' into knowledge and awareness).

NICE!

Plus the line between recreational and medicinal use is indistinguishable imo.

As the relaxed mental state empowers mind over matter.

And both enjoyment and pain are neurochemical states of mind.

Agreed and who gets to make these lines??

Not to mention the spiritual argument - which is both premature (for society) and overdue (for those Aware).

How would they tax it though? The same way they tax cigarettes and alcohol? - Wouldn't that mean being able to freely purchase cannabis from a counter down at Woolies or Coles or from a shop...like a bottle-o? Or would it only be available in shops like Off Ya Tree or Happy Herbs, possibly tobacconists? I'm not being sarcastic, I'm genuinely asking

Personally I would much rather see weed made legal instead of de-criminalised as it's fairer and it makes a shitload more sense...but with our society and current laws (which seem different for each state) I think the more likely option would be de-criminalisation rather than legalisation, in our lifetime anyway.

I just don't get it. Never have, never will!

Well, in California where medical marijuana is legal, they have specialised shops entirely for that purpose, where you must have and present a prescription from a doctor in order to buy. Watch "Super High Me" for a pretty interesting look inside these dispensaries, as well as a couple of good laughs.

Of course it'd be safer and better to simply aim for decriminalisation first, and then after a couple of years of that and it becomes obvious that society hasn't collapsed into itself, then we can start pre-emptive talks of maybe legalising it. But, as always with a matter this delicate, baby steps are best.

If we can just get the mainstream media talking about it honestly and without agenda, then that'd be a very good first step. An issue this controversial needs a clear and definite majority vote before it can even be considered passing into the law. You just know conservative politicans, i.e. every major political party in Australia, UK and USA, would still shoot it down if it's still in the 50/50 range. Obama and K-Rudd are still very conservative; don't even think that Labour is radically more liberal than the Liberal party. As with the Democrats and Republicans, the 'conservative' are to the right and the 'liberal' party are center-right at best.

So, yeah, first step is to get people talking about it without propaganda clouding the facts. We need honest debate within the media. Then we can start making progress for good.
