Second time my plants have died!

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone..i seem to be doing something wrong.

I've been starting an outdoor plant off in my backyard..

In good soil from my backyard (nice and healthy) and i water it once a day at about the same time each day.

But for some reason, they keep dying all of a sudden.

One day i look at them and they are ultra green and beautifully healthy. And then i come back the next day and they are all curled over and brown!

what's going on?! i'll take a picture of the dead product when i get home. but can anyone shed some light on this pleeaaseee?

am i not watering it enough or what?!

My baby was about 10 centimetres tall and looking awesome. and now it's dead.

HELPPPP!

ps. I keep it protected, so it's not animals or anything.

This is no good Beans ... im only guessing but maybe on the roof overnight temperature would be low and possible frost?

and on a sunny day the tin would radiate heat from the bottom of pot ...

often backyard soil can pack down in pots over time an thats why they sell potting mix ..

best of luck next time :(

my guess is your overwatering it, it's the number one cause of plant death by in-exp growers imo.

let the soil pretty much fully dry out between waterings, this could mean watering every second day when they are real small and soil is retaining a lot of moisture. best way is stick ya finger in the soil if it's moist don't water if it;s dry give it a bit.

peace

As a fellow inexperienced grower, I would second this. Think about how plants grow in the wild, it doesn't rain everyday does it? It generally rains in periods so plants are used to getting a soaking and then going without for a while. As seedlings their roots systems are not developed and they need very little water. I think Granny once said that a seedling only requires 10-20ml of water per day, so figure that into the equation when you are watering :D

At this time of year I would doubt it is due to the weather as I live in one of the coldest parts of NSW and mine are outdoors and alive. They might not be thriving but they are alive and fairly healthy considering the treatment I've put them through.

Oh and is your soil porous enough? The water needs to be able to penetrate it, which is why potting mix is generally better than ordinary soil.

What size pots are you using, the way the plants have died could suggest they became root-bound?

:D

The pot i was using was only small, but i thought the plant was small enough for the pot.

The pot is about 10cm high and 8cm wide.

Is that too small?

I was only a couple of days away from taking it out of the pot and putting it out in the bush by itself.

gahhh

I believe it was at the beginning, but as time went on it started to get all weird and didn't absorb the water as well.

So next time, potting mix ftw.
