RUDD TELLS GERMAINE TO SHUT UP

Feminist Germaine Greer should keep her thoughts about the death of Steve Irwin to herself, Labor foreign affairs spokesman Kevin Rudd says.

 

In an article in British newspaper The Guardian, Ms Greer said that the animal world had finally taken revenge on Irwin for causing stress to the animals he handled.

 

"I think Germaine Greer should just stick a sock in it," Mr Rudd told reporters in Canberra.

 

"You have got a grieving mother, you have got a couple of grieving young kids and a grieving nation and what to you get from Germaine Greer? You get a bucket load of politically correct pap - it's just nonsense.

 

"Steve Irwin was a nature conservationist, an animal conservationist and made a huge contribution to the preservation of wildlife world wide.

 

"And what do we get from Germaine Greer? some gratuitous, politically correct claptrap. She should put a sock in it," he said.

 

Greer said she had "not much sympathy" for Irwin if he was grappling with the stingray that killed him on the Great Barrier Reef.

 

Those on the boot with Irwin say he was not in any way harassing the stringray when it lashed out at him as he swan over it.

 

But The Guardian quoted Greer as saying: "As a Melbourne boy, Irwin should have had a healthy respect for stingrays, which are actually commoner and bigger in southern waters than they are near Port Douglas."

 

She described Irwin's behaviour as "bizarre", noting the famed incident when he held his baby son while feeding a crocodile during a show at his Australia Zoo on the Sunshine Coast.

 

"The whole spectacle was revolting," Greer said.

 

"The crocodile would rather have been anywhere else and the chicken had a grim life too, but that's entertainment at Australia Zoo.

 

"The animal world has finally taken its revenge on Irwin, but probably not before a whole generation of kids in shorts seven sizes too small has learned to shout in the ears of animals with hearing ten times more acute than theirs, determined to become millionaire animal-loving zoo-owners in their turn."

 

Police said footage of the incident showed Irwin in no way harassed or provoked the stingray.

Have a cone stonedstump and don't have a cow man. I'm not the only person who didn't like the bloke. In Darwin, his show came onto channel 8, which was the main channel, and that many ppl called up and complained about what a dickhead he was, that they took the show off after one episode. That has never happend before, or after. Northern Territorians are no-nonsense kind of ppl, and steve irwin, well, he was over the top. I mean, do you really have to piss off animals by pulling their tales etc to educate the ppl about how dangerous they are? He was more about entertainment rather than education. I think most ppl were hoping each time he fell into the water with a croc or hippo, that it would get him. Or that when he pulled king cobras out of the tree by the tales to piss them off and let them strike at his face, that maybe the snake might get a bite in. Statistically, the odds were against him sooner or later a deadly animal get him. Maybe one day we won't see wild animals as been put on earth for our entertainment, and admire them from a safe distance.

with every 1 person that hated him theres about 100 that didnt...personally I didnt like the way he handled the wild life... but hes only doing that to raise funds to save wild life.. and lets face it, he never harmed any animals.. and I for one loved watching his show... they had a croc hunter marathon on austar once, they will have it again .. I was glued to the tv... its great to watch...I laughed like fuck when was bitten or sprayed with cobra venom...

its sort of fitting he died the way he did... and I would love to go doing something I felt passionate about

Hey, i thought the guy was a joke, never said I hated him. I myself prefer Harry Butler style Australian docos. I guess some ppl need the element of danger and excitement to be entertained. Kind of takes away from beauty of the animals that he's trying to educate us about imo. There was another stooge that use to do my head in, i forget his name. Stocky guy. He used to jet ski in crocodile invested waters, and water ski in them dragged by helicopters. To each their own. I grew up in the N.T, and caught many snakes as a kid. I know you don't just reach down and pick them up by their heads and if you read my post without ur veins popin out of ur neck, you'd see I didnt' write that. I think it's a tragedy what happend and his kids would be suffering terribly. Losing an imediate family member is probably the most heart breaking experience a human can have. I wish them all the best
