Shy? Troubled by addiction? People are joining clinical trials, doing it for themselves - and science, writes Leonie Lamont. Sleep deprived for decades, Kate Adams was in no mood to miss out on even a minute's sleep after joining a clinical trial of a new anti-insomnia drug. Every night she would swallow a tablet. Every day she would phone the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research where she keyed in the hours and minutes of sleep she had had, and its …

Four federal parties have rallied in support of an initiative to replace a ban on cannabis use for adults, while strictly enforcing its prohibition for those under 18. Swiss voters are set to vote on the issue, rejected by parliament four years ago, in a November 2008 referendum. And once again, the Hempfest lived up to its reputation as the world's largest marijuana "protestival." With a core staff of around a hundred, led by the indefatigable Vivian McPeak, and about a thousand volunteers who worked to set up the event, keep it running smoothly, and tear it all down at the …

Still No Right to Holy Smoke Jacob Sullum August 11, 2008, 4:32pm reason ... free minds and free markets http://reason.com/blog/show/128038.html Church of Cognizance founders Dan and Mary Quaintance, whose case I discussed in my June 2007 reason story about religious use of drugs, are scheduled to be tried in Albuquerque this month on federal marijuana charges. The Quaintances, who were caught near Lordsburg, New Mexico, in 2006 with 172 pounds of marijuana, tried to get the charges against them dismissed by arguing that prosecuting them for possessing cannabis, their church's sacrament, violates the federal Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA). A federal judge…

Members of Congress Demand An End To Pot Possession Arrests Wednesday, July 30, 2008: At a press conference held this morning, members of Congress called on their fellow lawmakers to remove all federal penalties that criminalize the possession and use of marijuana by adults. “To those who say that the government should not be encouraging the smoking of marijuana, my response is that I completely agree,” said Representative Barney Frank (D-MA). “But it is a great mistake to divide all human activity into two categories: those that are criminally prohibited, and those that are encouraged. Former anti-marijuana lobbyist switches sides By Mike Soraghan Posted: 08/14/08 11:51 AM [ET] The Hill http://thehill.com/leading-the-news/former...2008-08-14.html The last time the House debated medical marijuana, David Krahl trod the halls of Capitol Hill lobbying against the legislation as deputy director of the Drug Free America Foundation. Now, he’s ready to lobby for allowing medicinal use of marijuana, and do anything he can to support it. So far, no one has asked him for help, but in a recent letter to medical marijuana bill sponsor Rep. Maurice Hinchey (D-N.Y.), he proclaimed that he’d reversed his position on whether cannabis can be a medicine. …

California to legalize Marijuana? 5 August 2008 PR Cannazine http://pr.cannazine.co.uk/content/view/475/1/ California finally has a bill in the works that could be passed as soon as this November that would legalize use and sales of marijuana. Marijuana would still be taxed with a $5 tax to sell an eighth ounce of Marijuana and a $50 tax for the growth of one marijuana plant. If this bill passes, it has many implications, but hardly any of them I see as bad. Many people fear an increase in the number of potheads if this bill is passed but that is not likely. In fact, the legalization of marijuana may actually decrease the number of potheads. Back in the 1920…
