Two people have died after eating death cap mushrooms at a New Year's Eve dinner party in Canberra. The deaths were confirmed by a spokesman for Sydney's Royal Prince Alfred Hospital this morning. The victims were waiting for liver transplants after eating the fungus. "It (the mushroom's toxin) is particularly toxic to the liver so you will eventually go into a liver failure and that's how these individuals would have succumbed to death," Dr Naren Gunja from the NSW Poisons Information Centre said. Four people ate the toxic mushrooms, which look very similar to a popular edible Chinese mushroom. One has been released from Canberra hospital and another is still receiving t…

A would-be saboteur arrested today at the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland made the bizarre claim that he was from the future. Eloi Cole, a strangely dressed young man, said that he had travelled back in time to prevent the LHC from destroying the world. The LHC successfully collided particles at record force earlier this week, a milestone Mr Cole was attempting to disrupt by stopping supplies of Mountain Dew to the experiment's vending machines. He also claimed responsibility for the infamous baguette sabotage in November last year. Mr Cole was seized by Swiss police after CERN security guards spotted him rooting around in bins. He explained that he was looking f…

HAVING been picked up for doing street burnouts while drink-driving, James Andrew Hunter had dropped his pants and told police to stick the breathalyser mouthpiece into his bottom. Toowoomba Magistrates Court heard Hunter, 26, had crashed his car after a drinking session at a mate's place but continued to drive with smoke pouring from one side of the vehicle, which attracted the attention of a police patrol late on the night of May 19. Mexican soldiers have seized two catapults that were being used by drug smugglers to fling packages of marijuana across the border with the US into Arizona. A military statement today (NZ time) says an anonymous tip led troops to a house in the border city of Agua Prieta where they found a catapult in the bed of a pickup truck and another inside the house. It says soldiers also seized 1.3 tons of marijuana during Monday's raid in Agua Prieta, which is across the border from Douglas, Arizona. Mexican troops also seized two catapults in the area last January. Authorities said then that it was the first time they had seen this smuggling method used by local traffick…

By PAUL CLIFFORD Published on Friday 21 October 2011 00:00 A DOPEY dope grower tipped police off to a cannabis farm in his home - when they heard him tell someone to clear it out. Mark Turnbull was arrested on July 13 when he was found in a property in College Road, Hebburn, which had a stash of cannabis plants inside. And while the 38-year-old was in custody, police heard him calling a friend and asking them to empty his own house before police searched it. When officers turned up at his address, in Cambridge Avenue, also Hebburn, they found 30 plants of ‘skunk’ - thought to be the strongest form of the Class B drug. Turnbull pleaded guilty to prod…
