I grew about two dozen poppy plants last year in pots. Up to 2 metres tall. Excellent harvest. Pretty too. I had them all growing in my front garden. Nobody even noticed. The fact is that the vast majority of people have no idea when it comes to plants. All plants are just green things with maybe flowers on them.

 

The leaves can be brewed into a nice tea with a nice subtle not-so-high. Some people might puke at the taste, but I quite like it with a dash of milk. Leaves can also be used as a salad vegetable. It's a good interest to keep a bloke happy when it's too cold to grow pot.

 

But I'm an old bugger with a heart condition that medicine has given up on, so I have an alibi.

I'm growing in my yard for some years already this plant. I'm not doing it for commercial purposes, just for my use. And it really helps

Ok ...

I will clear a few things up here ...

Growing poppies and tobacco is illegal ...and can carry fines both federally and state.

 

Firstly Poppies.

I have been an avid seed collector and horticulturist my whole life the number of cottage gardens I have walked into and seen poppies growing ...I have lost count by women and men in there 60's plus from seed they either obtained or sourced through family means ...they grow it year after year knowing full well they shouldn't ...but have nothing to hide as they do it for it;s beauty nothing more ...

so if the police came in they would most likely only get a warning .

So few people no what they look like unless they are seeding and unless there is signs of processing and you are doing other things ...you are highly unlikely to get into trouble especially in the small numbers ..but not to say you couldn't .

2. For the amount you would have to grow to support a habit ...you wouldn't be able too without someone noticing ....and besides what ever you did make you would use and it would be gone quickly off a small plot ...so either way your really wasting your time except for a one off curiosity try ...and besides ..even if you got addicted ...you would be out of it very soon ...

And anybody doing it without knowledge ...your being foolish.

 

And if you still want to experiment move to Tassie ...or move to ebay land  (Beware most are not the real thing and are a scam)

If you smoke the Tassie pop with out treating it first to remove the crap poison in it you will end up DEAD or very very sick. I am not a full bottle on what they have done to this strain of poppy.Read up on it.

Old varieties sourced on the mainland in ornamental gardens of people over 60 will be fine if they are heirloom
