Aphids at harvest

Recommended Posts

Have just found a bunch of aphids on one of my plants. Checked throughout and it seems they were camping out on just 1 branch. Rather than have to use neem at this late stage I chopped the branch. Trimmed it up and have it hanging.

1) will the aphids stay in there chewing away on buds that are drying? I'm thinking they will die or piss off as the buds dry up?

2) I've got a week or so to go on a couple of plants. Chances are that there are a few aphids in the remaining plant matter even though I went through them all with a loupe and fine tooth comb. Should I spray or wait? They don't seem to do much damage early on. Not that I could see anyway.

I noticed a few weeks ago that the same plant had all these little black dots on buds and leaves. I thought it was caterpillar poo or eggs as I'd seen a couple of tiny caterpillars. Does anyone know what it could be ? Is it related to the aphids? I'm pretty sure ships don't lay eggs. They give birth to their young.

Thanks all.

I agree with Growbaby, sounds like mites to me. You can use a mitecide to kill them off, but then you need to wait another two weeks for the chemicals to breakdown before harvest.

Another option and one that I use is to spray with pyrethium, its a natural insecticide that comes from dandelions, but I find it usually needs 2 applications a week apart to kill off the little fuckers. If you use Pyrethium be sure to spray both sides of the leaves. The little fuckers like to hide.

How many weeks into 12/12 are you?? How many weeks of 12/12 were you planning on before harvesting??

First grow and it's outdoor so not sure on times. I'm just waiting til trichs are 50%amber and then I'll chop. They've been in flower since about march 1.

I've don't some searching and I think it's just caterpillar poo. There are no other signs of spider mites. I'd have to have spider mite damage or spiders mites before seeing their eggs right?

Hey Homegrown,

You need to start your own topic. Here's a link to the Pests and Diseases forum https://cannabis.community.forums.ozstoners.com/index.php?app=forums&module=post&section=post&do=new_post&f=24 you can make your own topic in there.

But, those insects. By the looks of those, they seem like an ant to me. Possibly the Australian Carpenter Ant https://www.google.com.au/search?q=carpenter+ants&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&sqi=2&ved=0ahUKEwjv08iUnL3TAhXBG5QKHd9ZCT4Q_AUIBigB&biw=1600&bih=688&dpr=1#tbm=isch&q=australian+carpenter+ants&imgrc=ljhsecISqa-Q_M:&spf=503

They can be bastards to deal with but if you can find the nest, they can be managed. Do a Google search for carpenter ants. Here's a link to a Bayer site, https://www.environmentalscience.bayer.com.au/Pest-Management/WhatToControl/Carpenter-Ant but I'm unsure of its use on canna or near canna. You'd be much better of (for safety reasons), to find the nest and treat the nest imo.
