itchybromusic
just a suggestion rocks are one way to go about top dressing & retaining moisture the thing with rocks is they'er heavy & in a pot , can compact a bit as there hit with water & the soil softens , but doesn't really do anything else than water retention , which is good if you use green matter & straw you get the retaining moisture bit plus you feed the benne's in the soil which in turn feeds your plant , which mean you can work that your in veg the plants a little light green top dress with lucerne = alfalfa = Nyour about to go into flower , the plant has a need for calcium at that point ,you top dress with silver beet leaves , a green brown mulch layer can also work like a filter for water passing though it it also lets the plants do what they've evolved to do over thousands of years & sendfeeder roots to the mulch layer where there's lots of life & food feed the soil not the plant
Carnage
if you put a couple inches of small rocks on top.pretty much stops fungus gnats scarid fly as well. they don't go further than 2" odd below the surface to lay eggs.if there is 2" of rock , they cant find roots.handy extra tip

itchybromusic
another handy tip fungus gnats larva eat fungus , just so happens myko fungi live on rootsif your in coco & no other fungal food source that'll eat roots otherwisewith plenty of organic mater there should be plenty of gnat food otherthan ya roots , plus with a living soil all the bugs keep each other in checkso the gnats are in your soil but not to any great numbers if the rest of the life is kicking Edited December 13, 2016 by itchybromusic
Harry Bootlace
outdoors, heres a tip. KALE. yeah the trendy super food. Seriously snails love it. Plant a load of them, and snails will eat it like crazy and leave everything else alone. my mother now plants it in her vege patch, doesnt expect to EAT any herself but everything else is left for her. Grow420
Yeah i was looking to mulch them with something but untill pay day the rocks will do, purely for water retention. Its re vegging so all over the place, have just now stepped up its feeding (nitrosol) Sent from my SM-G900I using Tapatalk
