weird hydro

I was talking to a firend on msn and he sent me this link and it had the weirdest growing... the picture should be self explanitory.. can someone esplain what this guy/girl did? it was puppetmug on overgrow.com who possted the pic btw for reference usage....

no but I mean he has the WHOLE plant in like a half litre cup... n then an other cup just with water.. would that cause root rot? and would this be effective?if done right.. and a lil bigger pot ( the thing u keep the plant in, not .. yeah) would it be effective?

Sitting roots in unaerated water would yes, likely encourage root rot. The soil will stay far too wet, allowing no air to the roots.

 

Which is why the plant looks overwatered.

 

Not to mention the fact that the root system is at least as big as the above ground portions in mass in a healthy plant. That doesn't look like it would make that comparison.

so there is nothing in that setup work keeping, meaning using normal soild will yeild better results?
