Got Seed Problems

It all started to go downhill with the HDF...germination rates dropped off and now they are so poor I refuse to grow anything.

I should clarify....Getting the seeds to sprout is no problem....using the paper towell method on a warm source (but not hot) - they never dry out. The problem seems to be the next step..puttem them in the medium of which I have tried coco fibre, seed raising soil, growcubes, soil...and nothing happens...no sprouts are popping up...nothing....

The area is kept moist but not too wet...the humidity is good...and not too high and the environment is warm and not cold...

WTF is going on

My grow rates for seeds has gone from 100% to like 2% with multiple different strains....

Grrrrr

Cheer up Budster, you can cruise along for years without a loss then suddenly you kill everything. I've gone back to soaking for a day in filtered water and then straight into rockwool blocks and all is good again here. It can fuck with your confidence though, eh? I had this new pack of BBerry I waited awhile to plant cause I'd just killed so many seeds in a row. But ya gotta get back on that horse if ya want new strains..... same deal for me with buying seeds... I've given up for a while although there are still afew I want for my biosphere. But the boys at customs got a few and I can't be bothered right now. I know some will think it hippy ish, but I've found the long standing advice about planting and cloning on a waxing moon rather than a waning one does make a difference. Mother nature is in control, not us. Yeah, peace love and mung beans man, ya know...like wow.

Yeah, like WC has said, it happens.

Are you sure it's not the touching of the sprouting seedlings themselves? Or something else new in the environment that wasn't there before?

I personally direct plant into pots of perlite or perlite vermiculite and hand water, or bottom water. Perhaps you could go and get a whole buncha bag seed and do some trials with varying methods, soaking, paper towel of various brands and methods, direct sowing in various media, etc. Or you could try the good ol' fashioned stick em in a small pot of seed raising mixture. :)

Don't worry about it BW, you'll get there. I too had a nasty germing period for quite a while, but after a bit of adjustment, I ended up with a far better personal germ to viable seedling rate of 90% or so, with fresh seed of course. But hey, there's always exceptions.

Just had a thought, could it be the water in your local area may have changed? Any major roadworks nearby? :)

so you can get them roots showing right.

I use a medium of perlite and vermiculite, for germing about 50/50.

for pots I use little plastic disposable cups, with holes popped in bottom with skewer or sumthing.keep water level about 1cm up the side of the cups, as well as misting every now and again with plain water in spray bottle. lights on 18/6 not 24, cos they tend to pop up at night. I put em in root tip facing upwards if possible, cover over with medium real gently. I use these systems HERE for keeping the water at goood temp and aerated. temp only about 20 to 22 degrees, I dont set too high cos temp can only raise in the day.

Maybe thats the go, dont have gentle enough fingers, maybe need to try a bit of direct planting.

Anyways maybes I'm lucky, but only lose a seed every now and again, lately I been losing most to them being fucking retarded, forming tiny little cracks and popping outta the soil still with their shell tight and not able to be removed. eventually dry up and shrivel, or seeds that dont form leaves past cotyledons more recently.

Seeds are good man, a plant from seed is something special, getting a plant from clone is just having a go of your mates slut, too many people have been their first and done that, but a seed plant is your own, not sloppy seconds.

anyways, I hate rockwool and coco, personal opinion, no reall reasons, and soil donmt belong in a hydro growers room. So I reckon give a perl/verm mix a try.

and treat em gentle, they only bubs.

Yeh Im thinking its a case of me not treating them with a little respect...from transferring them from their sprouted area to their growing medium to watering them...

Heres hoping..things look up....

:) shoulda done it years ago...

we used to sow seed of pansy and stuff, get em up in 6" pots flowering for mothers day. that shits dust. carnation`s just as bad. you dont wanna make the job harder than it is BW. just bung them in...set and forget i always say.

Everyone has different method here is mine.

1)sit rockwool cubes over night in 5.5 ph distilled water

2)squeeze out most of water out of cube

3)place seed pointy end down (very important) in rockwool hole and lightly cover seed with rockwool.

4)place seeds on pragnation tray ( i like heat"n"grow)and place on heat mat if required with humidity dome in place.

5)place under fluro with 18 on 6 off timer.

6)2 days after they crack water very slighty with 25% nute mix with little bit of oxy-plus and rootzone accelerate.

7) After 3 more days remove humidity dome

8)After 2 more days place cubes under 400watt MH about 1200mm away, until cube is bursting with roots.

9)start vegie growth.
