AN increased risk of developing testicular cancer from smoking marijuana is just one more reason not to use the drug, Australian researchers say.
An American study published in the journal Cancer compared 163 young men diagnosed with testicular cancer with about 290 healthy men of the same age.
It found that men with a history of recreational marijuana use were twice as likely to have two types of testicular cancer that commonly occur in younger men and carry a worse prognosis.

The findings confirmed earlier studies which also showed links between cannabis use and testicular cancer.
The founding professor and director of the National Cannabis Prevention and Information Centre (NCPIC) at the University of NSW, Jan Copeland, said the results were not surprising because there were cannabis receptors in the testes and smoking marijuana affected sperm development.
"It is just one more avoidable risk factor for the development of a range of health conditions," Professor Copeland said.
"As the peak ages for the development of testicular cancer and cannabis use coincide in young adulthood, protecting health and fertility is just one more reason not to smoke cannabis for this high-risk group."
Cancer Council Australia CEO Ian Olver said although studies that relied on self-reporting drug use could be questionable, the results of this study were convincing.
The study also found that men with a history of cocaine use had a reduced risk of both subtypes of testicular cancer.
The University of Southern California study suggested this could be because cocaine had already damaged or killed sperm-producing germ cells, therefore those cells could not become cancerous.
Marijuana use has previously been linked to and increased risk of schizophrenia, memory loss and learning difficulties,

Ummm, so the way they collected the information was flawed... but they accepted the results as accurate anyway. Sounds more like politics than statistical inference.

Questionable data collection methods....what does this mean???

And if so, how can the results be conclusive.

I would really like to access this study and get further elaboration as to what the Cancer Councile CEO means.

If data recruitment methods are questionable, than conclusive results cannot be applied to the whole population.

Self recruiment methods attract a certain proportion of the population which may not be representative of the entire population, therefore somewhat inconclusive.

It wasn't the recruitment method but the data collection method that was questionable. Many people will lie rather than admit to engaging in illegal activities when interviewed face to face.

This is probably why the 'healthy' sample is considerably larger than the 'diseased' sample. it's an attempt to reduce the effect of lying on the overall sample response... unfortunately, because you really can't know how many of the sample are telling the truth about their cannabis use, trying to control for lying is just guess work.

How interesting that this artice about this alleged study doesn't say who performed the study, where, under what conditions etc. Also, the article is on news.com, wholly owned by News Corp (a wonderful source of dreary and thoroughly misleading/misrepresented information and complete flat-out lies). I also find interesting the timing of this article, as i was directed on Twitter to another artice around September 6-7 that DOES say who performed the research, where and how. Oddly enough, the research done by actual reasearchers at various universities using empirical evidence and scientific theory has actually shown that THC as well as CBD and possibly even other cannabinoids play an active role in TRIGGERING CELL DEATH IN CANCEROUS AND PRE-CANCEROUS CELLS (especially head, kneck, lung and even breast cancers).

So here we are presented with a semi-anonymous "Study" from a source that could be considered at BEST dubious, and at worst outright propaganda and another publication of actual research from several universities across the globe that seems to show that not only is Cannabis great for treating symptoms like pain and nausea if you should be so unlucky to get cancer, but that Cannabis compounds could actually hold the key to curing (at LEAST some forms of) cancer. You read the article and decide for yourself which of them has a greater likelihood of being true.

That's right sam.

What better woman to front an organisation then a sensitive mentally ill woman (Jan Copeland). Sound, smart response from Sam.

Couldn't agree more with some of the things that are being said here.

Let's all stop for a minute and have a cheer and reflect on the governments attrocities, it starts with genocide of the aboriginal race.

There are many reasons to support the illegality of cannabis and many of these reasons are for good intentions only. But there doesn't seam to be any justice in good people getting their door kicked down for a safer substance then alcohol.
