The Cannabible

This is a great book, I've had it a fair while now, number 2 is almost out now, so I figure I'll get in a review before it does come out.

The Cannabible is not a book on growing pot, it is a book of photography of (mostly cured) buds, there is a little bit of growing advice here and there, but most of it is crap, I doubt Jason King has grown a plant in his life, but that doesn't matter, He is an excellent photographer and if you like drooling over budshots then no book is better than this one.

You might think that you can see good enough buds on the internet, but thats not true, thats like comparing good holiday snaps with National Geographic, Jason King can make the shittiest looking buds look like beautiful art.

The book is supposed to be some kind of strain base, but it fails as a strain base, the "strain" reports are based on samples purchased off the black market, so he's more judging the grower more than the strain, but overall he seems to know a good smoke (except for his opinion on the great great white shark). And his attempts to describe the different tastes of cannabis are great.

The Jason King section of the book is more designed for world travellers than pot growers, its more about what strains are the trademarks of what areas, only 250 or so strains are covered so many of your faves that you are expecting are missing and in there place wierd strains you've never heard of, at first I thought those strains might not really exist, but over time I've learnt they are all real.

Other than the photos the best bit of the book is Robert Clarke's (author of MJ Botany and Hasish) introduction about the history of western and dutch cannabis breeding, giving a good outlay of what has happened to make us end up with the cannabis strains we have today, along with presenting correct information that conflicts with some of the errors jason makes in the same book. and theres a great family tree style chart to show the cannabis introductions and company origins of each strain and the subsequent crossings and releases. Although its far from complete its still great, especially for those fairly new to the cannabis strains world.

Jason King is misinformed about alot of things, like Diesel is pure indica, matanuska thunderfuck is pure sativa, and I disagree with alot of his opinions like organic pot is more potent and that white widow is weak and boring. And that skunk #1 ever had an acrid indica aroma, I've grown the pure from TFD and the smell is still primarily sweet.

But that is not what I bought the book for, I bought the book for nice eye-candy and as a good coffee table book, and that it is, it blows away its competitor "the Big Book of Buds" away in every aspect, photography, originality of photography and information, presentation and layout, and personality. The Big Book of Buds is just a glorified seed catalogue, and everything in it is available on the internet really. Ed's really lost the plot.

anyway cant wait to get my hands on cannabible number 2, its delayed because he's being sued by Soma for saying he didn't like his pot, I would've thought thats what being a pot critic is all about, but anyways, number 3 is apparently gonna have a strong emphasis more on Landrace strains, with alot of stuff on aussie NZ strains, really cant wait for that.

for people who like photos of cured nuggets 10 cones out of 10.

for people who don't like photos of cured nuggets 0 cones out of 10.

I believe it was about 50 bucks ordered in from Angus and Robertson as soon as it was released, So yeah pretty expensive, but probably cheaper if you can find a copy at Dymocks, one thing though, is that the hardcover sucks, its a different sized book, not square and doesn't feel right.

A landrace strain is a strain that is natively bred and grown, like say Highland Thai, Colombian Gold, Punta Roja, Vietnam Black, Hindu Kush etc.... I think it needs to have been around in the area for 50 years before it gets the landrace classification, Old Mother Sativa (originally Mullumbimby Madness) is a strain thats been considered an "australian" landrace, even though its just a pure thai plant, because it has been grown and acclimatised for over 50 years in Aus. When we were being born everything was landrace really, and most landrace were sativa, but now because of the indoor market and the crackdown on smuggling most of the available landrace is indica.

I have to agree with you there WC. I bought Big Book of Buds a while ago and was a little disapointed in the quality of Photography. The information inside is pretty average as well.

Do you know of any seedbanks stocking Australia's only land race - Old Mother Sativa (Mullimbimby :D ). I'd like to grow a big fuck off bush

sativa tied down to make a vine/hedge one of these days

yeah for me its like good porn, I can't look in these books without smoking alot of pot. I really like the dried nug shots too, dope flowers are beautiful but all tend to look the same, and they always look better right in front of you than in a photo, but the cured photos always look better than the bud itself does in real life.
