The Body Shop Ads Under Fire For Use Of Hemp Leaf

Recommended Posts

Popular cosmetic chain, The Body Shop has come under fire in a Swedish municipality after using hemp leaves in a recent commercial.

The Örebro municipality has accused the cosmetic’s firm of hampering efforts to discourage teen drug use. The crime prevention unit – Örebrå – visited The Body Shop’s headquarters in central Sweden’s high street Drottningatan last Friday to tell execs that the new posters, which display a Cannabis leaf are unacceptable. A spokeswoman for The Body Shop Sweden, Karin Wickberg Taylar, said on Wednesday that the authorities felt that the posters were provocative and offensive and would undermine local efforts to tackled drug use and abuse among youth.

Ms Wickberg Taylar also said that the firm had no plans to take down the posters. She said that the cosmetics company would not remove the ad campaign as nothing in the product has anything to do with drug use.

She also argued that industrial hemp is used in many everyday items and the fact the crime unit finds it offensive comes from a lack of knowledge of the industry.

Ms Wickberg Taylar also said that hemp is commonly used in The Body Shop’s products and the leaf symbol has been a global marketing tool of the firm for some time. She did admit that, although there are few problems with the use of the symbol, authorities had, on occasion, complained.

Citing similar problems in France, Ms Wickberg Taylar said that the firm was in compliance with Swedish advertising laws and will continue to support the campaign.
