Best Mulch

After some input on the best mulch to use out bush... WA is very dry already this year so need all the water saving potential there is.. Have heard seaweed but not sure wether you neede to wash it in fresh water first or just stick with straw!!

yea seaweed would be great only problem might be the salt content duuno

anything plant matter around like bushes, prune leafy branches of trees, hay then spread shadecloth over the mulch and peg it down

Seaweed doesn't have salt in it.

 

I use Cane mulch it's cheap, lucerne is the better option it is far more nutrient rich hay.

Chucking some coco coir or similar grade substrate into the mix couldn't hurt.

 

Mushroom compost if available is another option.

 

Shade cloth as above is a good idea. Jute is also another reasonable option.

Pea straw. Very rich in nitrogen. I love it. Can be bought in small plastic bales at Bunnings.

yeah, pea-straw or peanut shell (difficult in wa). BUT when you use other materials, even dry cowshit, when the mulch rots it will rob nitrogen from yr soil! so always sprinkle urea on yr mulch when you mulch.

An old trick that the old school growers use to do that worked very very well.. and I am a little upset that it is not used more often in the dry areas any more...

 

get news papers... and once you have put your plant into the ground and filled in the hole place news paper where you would normaly put mulch and cover with dirt it works very well in areas that is hard to get to your plot and you can only visit 1 or 2 times a month
