Pot Producer Applicant Claims He Was Threatened

LAS CRUCES - A local man applying to be a medical marijuana producer told police he was threatened by a man he asked to resign from his board of directors.

 

The county's first producer was authorized in June by the New Mexico Department of Health, bringing to 11 the number of such nonprofits licensed to serve the county's 122 medical cannabis patients, out of almost 2,000 statewide.

 

As part of finalizing his board, the complainant told police he had background checks done on the members, according to the police report. When the checks came back, however, he discovered that one of the men had a "lengthy police record" that would disqualify him from being part of the medical pot provider.

 

The disqualified board member's criminal history includes a 1995 conviction for giving alcohol to minors, speeding more than 21 miles over the speed limit in 2002 and failing to carry his driver's license in 2006.

 

When the complainant called the man Aug. 23 to request his resignation, he said the man became "very irate and threatening," spent half an hour "berating" him and then threatened to "slap the s*** out of him," according to the police report.

 

None of the other five board members are believed to have been similarly threatened. No new charges were filed.
