Oldbury super-stoner tells court

Recommended Posts

A PERMANENTLY stoned Oldbury man is to face a special court hearing to determine whether cannabis worth £25,000 in his home was for his ‘personal use’.

Karl Priest, who starting toking the demon weed when he was just 13-years-old, told Wolverhampton Court that the bumper crop of 129 cannabis plants would last him just three months.

Recorder Barry Berlin said he felt it was far too much cannabis for one man to use and ruled there should be a special hearing to determine whether Priest's statement was true.

Priest of Railway Lane admitted producing the controlled drug and he was remanded on bail until October lst by the Recorder at Wolverhampton Crown Court.

Miss Alka Brigue prosecuting said police forced their way into the house and they discovered 79 cannabis plants being cultivated inside a front bedroom.

There were another 40 plants being dried on a metal rail in another room and, when questioned, Priest told officers he had started growing his own cannabis because he was sick of being "ripped off" by dealers.

The crop of cannabis had an estimated street value of £25,000 but the farm being operated by Priest was capable, said Miss Brigue, of producing three harvests a year.

Priest told the court he had planted about 100 seeds and it had always been his intention to get enough cannabis to last him for around three months.

"I was using between 10 and 15 grammes a day - I would smoke cannabis all night while watching films," he added. "I first tried it when I was 11 and I have been smoking cannabis on a daily basis since I was 13."

He stressed he would not have supplied any of the crop and added that some of the plants would have ended up on the compost heap because they were weak.

Priest said he no longer socialised after breaking up with his girlfriend and concluded. "It has got to the point where I am obsessed by cannabis. I smoke about 10 spliffs a night."

Miss Blondelle Thompson defending said the cannabis was all for Priest's personal use but the Recorder said a further hearing was needed to determine if that was the case.
