dumb question do ya really need the pump

I think u are talking about a airpump in a bubbler....

 

If so yes u need the pump otherwise the water will not have any o2 in it and the plants will drownd ;-)

nope mate, you dont need a pump at all, you need the pump if your gonna be anal about things and check and alter the pH every day or you are working with a truncheon or whatever, to keep the water the same in each bucket.

 

But the way I do it is to just fill my raised topping up resevoir and have a inline valve (tap) between the raised res and the control res, leave the tap off and fill the raised res with water and add nutes and correct the pH, then open up the tap and let the water run into the buckets, then change it every 2 weeks, or change most of it, as much as my pump will suck out.

 

If you go away for a week I would recommend turning the water pump off in case you get a flood from roots blocking the drainline.
