Can I just ask out of curiosity, why not to use dimmer switches for fans.

Never grown indoors, but will be doing in the future.

The cheap lighting dimmers consist of a variable resistor inline with the device being dimmed. This dissipation of the extra power creates quite alot of heat, creating a fire hazard, also you dont save any power, as the extra power is being dissipated by the dimmer.

 

The more expensive, better quality fan controls are a variable inductor, this uses the principle of electro-magnetism to limit the current in the circuit. They generate very little heat and save you power and therefore money.
