Synthetic [DELTA]-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol (Dronabinol) Can Improve the Symptoms of Schizophrenia

Schwarcz, Glenn MD; Karajgi, Basawaraj MD; McCarthy, Richard MD, PhD

ABSTRACT

We are reporting improvement of symptoms of schizophrenia in a small group of patients who received the cannabinoid agonist dronabinol (synthetic Δ-9-tetrahydrocannabinol). Before this report, cannabinoids had usually been associated with worsening of psychotic symptoms. In a heuristic, compassionate use study, we found that 4 of 6 treatment-refractory patients with severe chronic schizophrenia but who had a self-reported history of improving with marijuana abuse improved with dronabinol. This improvement seems to have been a reduction of core psychotic symptoms in 3 of the 4 responders and not just nonspecific calming. There were no clinically significant adverse effects. These results complement the recent finding that the cannabinoid blocker rimonabant does not improve schizophrenic symptoms and suggest that the role of cannabinoids in psychosis may be more complex than previously thought. They open a possible new role for cannabinoids in the treatment of schizophrenia.

Ya can bet THAT won't make the news

Yep of course it wont, because Cannabis is the leading cause of schizophrenia....

Pfft these people prob already had some kind of mental disturbance and they use cannabis

because it helps them feel more level. Then one day, week, month they cant get there cannabis

and have a meltdown....oh it must have been caused by the cannabis use....how about we put

you on some Psychotropic drugs that we have no scientific evidence about what they actually do.

We need our own news channel!!

But the science is demonstrating that cannabinoids play a role with schizophrenia, just what the role is and if it's the same role for everyone is the question. Cannabinoids play a homeostatic role and regulate every type of system in the body - so more or less cannabinoids is going to have an effect in various ways, and everyone is different in how much they produce vs. how much they need etc.

We should try to avoid claiming it DOES this or DOES NOT do that, as it will likely do both depending on who you are and what type of receptor ratio and profile your body has, what you respond to individually.

What is important is that this is a very, very safe molecule that the body produces and uses for a huge variety of tasks, and that we have quite a large range in which subtle effects can be felt. It's a useful, safe tool that should be on the shelf in every chemist and herbalist in the nation, just like it was at the start of this century.

Nitram as Niall said the point is that these were people for who NOTHING HAD WORKED and the one thing that did was the thing claimed to be the major "cause" of their ailment.

What it shows is that medical practice is just that, "practice" them wankers really do not know what they are doing. Mostly they just guess most of the time.

How many others who are currently on anti-psychotics(dangerous poisons they are) could actually be helped far more by Cannabis of the correct strain (for them) with out the life threatening side effects/$costs of the Pharmaceuticals (from the Greek "Pharmakia" meaning "Sorcery")

Cannabis will probably not help all psychotics but it would definitely help many if the anecdotal evidence counts for anything, the anecdotal evidence for willow bark led to the discovery of aspirin after all.

Many other "medicines" came about the same way, take natural occurring alkaloid and synthesise it, patent it , get original plant banned so no competition, make lots of money.
