A 48-year-old Innisfail man has been sentenced to two years jail for growing more than 2,000 cannabis plants in far north Queensland.

The Supreme Court in Cairns has heard that in July last year drugs squad detectives raided the Mena Creek property of Russell Gordon Holt and found marijuana crops in five locations.

Holt told police he grew the drugs for his own use.

However, justice Stanley Jones rejected that, telling the court he grew too much for own use.

Holt was convicted of drug cultivation, possession and possession of drug production equipment.

After taking into consideration Holt's previous drug offences justice Jones sentenced him to two years jail with a non-parole period of three months.
