Nine arrested over SA-Qld drug scheme

Police have arrested nine people in South Australia and Queensland after cracking an alleged drug trafficking operation involving large quantities of cannabis.

 

Police allege that cannabis grown hydroponically in South Australia had been shipped to Queensland over the past two years.

 

Since Friday, police have arrested four people in SA and charged them with trafficking a commercial quantity of cannabis.

 

Queensland police arrested five people and charged them with various drug offences.

 

Three men arrested in Adelaide have been bailed to appear in court in November.

 

The fourth man arrested in SA, a 55-year-old man from Gympie, Queensland, was remanded in custody to appear next month.

 

Police said they had seized about 17kg of dried cannabis, $80,000 in cash, eight cannabis plants and a large quantity of hydroponic equipment when they raided house at Gawler River, just north of Adelaide on Friday night.

 

Police were still investigating, a spokesman said.

 

"It will be alleged that the syndicate was involved in a long-running operation which involved large quantities of hydroponically-grown cannabis being trafficked from South Australia to Queensland over an approximate two-year period," he said.
