POLICE have uncovered an elaborate hydroponic drug set-up in the back shed of a Southport home.

As part of Operation Mamba -- an ongoing operation targeting drug and property crime -- police executed search warrants on four different addresses, netting over $30,000 worth of cannabis.

In the first raid of the day, police searched a Southport home, uncovering what officers say were drugs with a street value of about $20,000.

"The first raid ... netted a hydroponic set-up which included approximately 13 cannabis plants up to 110cm in height, located in a shed at the back of the house," said Acting Senior Sergeant Scott Bolitho of Southport police.

He said utensils and compressed cannabis were found.

"They say a man's shed is his palace; this is a drug palace. It seems to have been established there for some time," he said.

"One thing that astounds us is obviously it has been going on for some time here.

"Surely the pungent smell that comes from these set-ups can be smelled by neighbours.

"It's quite sophisticated and yet it is a backyard set-up -- it's something we seem to uncover quite regularly."

A 44-year-old man will front Southport Magistrates Court next month on charges relating to possession and production of a dangerous drug and possession of drug utensils.

In another raid at Labrador, police uncovered about 140g of compressed cannabis packaged and ready for sale.

A 42-year-old man has been charged with supplying drugs and possessing drugs and utensils.

Six people in total were arrested during yesterday's operations and will face a total of 17 charges relating to drug and property offences.

Sen-Sgt Bolitho said police had uncovered a number of drug operations since the start of Operation Mamba in January.

"We've made approximately 55 arrests on 150 charges specifically related to drugs and property crime," he said.

"We're discovering through these operations there's quite a few individuals out there trying to make a few bucks by making these makeshift set-ups.

"They're quite sophisticated but it doesn't take a huge amount to produce a large amount of dangerous drugs that goes onto our streets."

Duh rug war?

Sure, I'll fight the rug war, I hate rugs. They trip you and they come

all unravelled. You have to beat em at least once a week or they just

lie there. Glad you folks realize the complexity of this situation.

End all rug use in Australian homes by 2010. Once we conquer this menace

we can move onward to Linolium...

:D
