A man who was found with three and a half ecstasy tablets in his possession after detection by a sniffer dog was fined $3,500 in Mudgee Local Court on September 17.

Shortly after midnight on July 27, police entered a Mudgee hotel with a drug detection dog, which went straight up to John Gillespie of Mudgee.

The dog positioned himself beside Gillespie on his right hand side, which police evidence stated meant this action by the dog indicated that it had scented drugs.

When spoken to by police Gillespie at first told police he did not have any drugs on him but had been smoking cannabis earlier that night.

However, police noticed that Gillespie had become nervous and informed they were going to conduct a strip search, he reached down the front of his trousers and removed a package containing two white tablets and one and a half brown tablets.

Police proceeded with a strip search but found nothing but bar staff handed police a cigarette that Gillespie was seen to drop over the bar as they entered the hotel with the dog. Police also found Gillespie to be in possession of three grams of cannabis.

The accused made full admissions to police and said that the tablets were in fact ecstasy and that the rolled cigarette contained cannabis.

Gillespie said the drugs were for his own personal use.

Gillespie pleaded guilty to the two offences and Magistrate Tom Hodgson fined him $3,500 plus costs on a possession of a prohibited drug over the ecstasy tablets and $200 plus costs over cannabis possession.
