Mother of eight headed drug ring: Police

BY ANDREW THOMSON

17/09/2008 12:00:00 AM

A MAILORS Flat mother-of-eight was yesterday remanded in custody along with seven alleged co-offenders after police drug raids.

Police allege that Leanne Elizabeth Walker, 39, of Russells Road, was the principal in a Warrnambool district ecstasy and amphetamines drug ring.

Warrnambool Magistrates Court was told yesterday that Ms Walker used three daughters and two of their boyfriends as well as other associates to distribute drugs.

Seven people have been charged with conspiracy to traffic in a commercial quantity of ecstasy and amphetamines.

They include Ms Walker, Jamie Lee Hurle, 21, of Karong Court, Casey Walker, 18, of Queens Road, Matthew Eccles, of Queens Road, Daniel Greenwood, of Karong Court, Pauline Haebich, of Whitehead Court, and Tyson Debono, 18, of Tylden Street, Dennington.

Maxwell David Brown, of Merri Street, Warrnambool, has been charged with trafficking a drug of dependence.

Ms Walker's de facto partner Darren Irving is at large and wanted by police.

Ms Walker made a bail application in court claiming that she needed to breast feed her six-week-old baby and look after two other young children.

Magistrate Ian von Einem said she had not shown exceptional circumstances and Ms Walker withdrew her bail application. Three of her children have been taken into care by Department of Human Services officers.

Warrnambool Detective Senior Constable Colin Ryan told the court that the Warrnambool Criminal Investigation Unit started Operation Option in February this year and telephone intercepts revealed the extent to which the alleged co-accused were involved in the ring.

He said police seized $10,000 in cash and amphetamines, ecstasy and cannabis in Warrnambool yesterday.

Detective Senior Constable Ryan said weekly trips were made to Melbourne, Ballarat or Geelong in a 22-week period and ring members paid $250,000 for drugs.

He estimated the profit margin for amphetamines was 40 per cent.

Detective Senior Constable Ryan claimed that Mr Eccles and Mr Debono were the drug ring's principal salesmen and distributors.

He alleged that Ms Hurle had travelled to Melbourne twice in the past two weeks, met a courier and was handed drugs. Police claim to have surveillance video of Ms Hurle's activities.

All the alleged co-offenders were remanded in custody until tomorrow when bail applications are expected to be made.
