The new Liberal Government is facing its first potential policy challenge with Independent Upper House MP Shelley Archer vowing to block any moves to repeal laws which decriminalise prostitution in Western Australia.

Ms Archer says she voted for laws to decriminalise prostitution and regulate brothels in April, and will only support new laws if they improve conditions for sex workers.

"If they put together some legislation to improve what we currently have I'd certainly look at that, but I wouldn't repeal the legislation that's there," she said.

Ms Archer says she will also block any attempts to repeal cannabis laws.

Ms Archer will share the balance of power in the Legislative Council until May next year and says she will welcome legislation introduced by the Nationals.

"If they're introduced by the National Party, " she said.

"I've got quite a bit of respect for them."

Ms Archer also predicts that new Liberal leader Colin Barnett will have his hands full leading a minority government.
