NSW Police Force Media Release

Police have seized in excess of $4 million worth of illicit drugs and charged 29 people as part of an ongoing 10-month operation on the Mid North Coast.

The latest arrest was yesterday when a 22-year-old North Haven man was arrested at Port Macquarie police station and charged with knowingly take part in the supply of a large commercial quantity of cannabis.

He was bailed to appear at Port Macquarie Local Court on 20 October.

Operation Panelling was established by police from the Mid North Coast Local Area Command in December 2007 to investigate the commercial cultivation and supply of cannabis in the command.

As a result of the operation police identified a highly-organised syndicate allegedly involved in the cultivation and supply of cannabis in the region.

To date, investigators have seized cash, and almost 200 kilograms of dried cannabis and in excess of 1400 cannabis plants. The estimated potential street value of the seized drugs is more than $4 million.

Detective Inspector Michael Heap, the Crime Manager from Mid North Coast Local Area Command said “I commend the police involved in Operation Panelling. As a result of their investigations a significant amount of drugs have been kept off our streets and many arrests made.

“Investigations are continuing and those involved in the cultivation and supply of illegal drugs on the Mid North Coast should be warned that Operation Panelling will continue their work to identify and charge them.

“Members of the community can play an important role in helping police to identify people involved in the cultivation and supply of illicit drugs.”

Anyone who has information that could assist with the Operation, is urged to contact Port Macquarie Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Information can be provided in the strictest confidence.
